I would highly recommend this book

God, Islam, and the Skeptic Mind is the first book of its kind, which addresses some of the most pertinent questions from an Islamic perspective. The authors do a phenomenal job of simplifying complex arguments to make this work accessible to a larger audience while also ensuring that the arguments are represented correctly. I would highly recommend this book!

one can understand why so many are doing their best to vilify

IF ever in modern times, Islam has been brought to life by using all of the tools available to scholars, this is it.
It is not just the depth of understanding of the noble book, the Qu'ran, but their knowledge of modern science in the fields of matter and existence.
Being and Consciousness are explained in the simplest fashion to the extent that the average person can relate, not only fully, but convincingly.
Now, one can understand why so many are doing their best to vilify , de-legitimize and keep an open discussion of Islam from the public ear.
The rest of the world is way ahead of us and now we know why Islam is the fastest growing ethical and moral system that man has ever known.
It is truly unstoppable and it shouldn't be. This book should be read twice to fully taste its sweetness.

YouTube Community Given Its Due

Finally, a book about YouTube that shows a clear understanding of the web site's potential for social networking. The authors have really done their homework (or research) well and picked up on things that other writers have missed. For example, they noticed that YouTubers often extend their social interaction to other sites like Stickam. And they caught the controversy over the Partner program which served to divide the community.

I'm very invested in the YouTube community so I found it fascinating to read the observations of social scientists on this cultural phenomenon. The authors have done an excellent job of explicating the significance of YouTube as a creative community and cultural force.

In summary, this book is quite impressive. As an active participant on YouTube I can attest to its accuracy. I even found some insight into certain aspects of the online world through phrases like "attention economy". The YouTube community is certainly the biggest group of attention whores you'd ever meet and it is important to realize how much of their creative endeavors and drama is a fight for attention in a media economy driven by attention.

The authors, both experts in media studies and creativity and innovation, provide a scholarly look at YouTube and why it has come to dominate the internet as it has today, making "YouTube" a powerful addition to any internet studies collection.

YouTube and participating in the culture

I am reviewing this work for its own sake, and also including comments concerning the applicability of the book for discussions in church (and other non-profit organizations).

This concise and focused book in the Digital Media and Society Series [...] brings the tools of sociology and critical theory to bear on the video-sharing phenomenon YouTube, a site co-created, as Burgess points out, by YouTube Inc., "users who upload content to the site, and audiences who engage that content."[1] The authors conduct their research of YouTube by examining trends in video content that was most favorited, most viewed, most discussed, and most responded during six days of samples in the fall of 2007. Their method of interpretation is an interesting admixture of literary theory, sociological analysis, critical theory, and media studies.[2]

Perhaps the most significant change in my thinking after reading the book is to stop thinking of YouTube as just one thing. Instead, I now see how the site as a platform performs a variety of functions, some of which are especially applicable for congregational mission and ministry. YouTube's status as a meta business--the "new category of business that enhances the value of information developed elsewhere and thus benefits the original creators of that information"[3]--is the largest contributing factor in this regard.

1) Cultural archive: Burgess writes, "It is possible to exhaust your own capacity for nostalgia before exhausting the possibilities of the vintage material available on YouTube already... a record of contemporary global popular culture (including vernacular and everyday culture) in video form, produced and evaluated according to the logics of cultural value that emerge from the collective choices of the distributed YouTube community."[4] I have not conducted a study to learn to what extent Christians have participated in making use of YouTube as a cultural archive, but I hope they are, and I would like to contribute. This should and can extend well beyond simply posting recordings of worship services and sermons on-line, but observing how YouTube functions as a cultural archive may point out to what degree Christianity is less engaged in culture creation in the video/visual medium, or perhaps even whether Christians are as engaged in crafting culture that can be archived.

2) Passive viewing of popular media: YouTube allows users to share traditional media from all kinds of sources and perspectives. You can watch educational programming on YouTube, clips of movies and comedy, concert footage, videos, etc. Again, this is an under-utilized but essential resource for the church. Kids in my confirmation class, for example, make use of this feature to watch videos from their re:form confirmation curriculum in between confirmation classes. And although it does not count as "popular" media, items I have posted on YouTube offering amateur history and footage of the previous congregation I served, have been influential in people visiting our worship, but even more importantly, gaining a richer understanding of church history and rural church culture (for footage, simply search for East Koshkonong on YouTube).

3) Participatory engagement with user-created content: For YouTube, participatory culture is core business.[5] This ought to be true of the church as well, but often it is not. Many members of the church approach the church from a consumerist mentality. Many leaders in the church are guilty of treating members as consumers. One of the most intriguing charts in the book is a comparison of user-created and traditional media across the measures of popularity. Essentially, there is a correlation between user creation and user participation. In other words, more of the most discussed and most responded content on YouTube are user-created; more of the traditional media (television excerpts, movie clips, etc.) are in the most viewed category but less discussed and interacted with.
This should tell us a lot about how members of congregations will engage the "content" of congregational ministries. So, for example, although sermons and other traditional media in the church will remain the "most viewed" and perhaps (hopefully?) "most favorited," content created by members such as a small group bible study or social justice advocacy will likely be the "most responded" and "most discussed" content. The church then functions as the "meta" organization that hosts and stewards all these forms of content creation and sharing.

Two additional comments: First, this book, together with many books on the new media, highlights the gaming and play aspects of new media. For example, when there are "flame wars" on YouTube, often they are quite self-aware, exhibiting how "flame wars can be thought of as ludic events: structured games that are part of the fun of participating in the social network."[6] The church has simply not attended well enough as of yet to gaming and play in theology, church leadership, and life. This is a wake-up call. So, for example, when an octogenarian popular user of YouTube offered courses on social networking for folks in his peer group, he says, "You must be prepared to be a child again, to learn by playing around."[7]

Second, there is so much worry about the moral content of YouTube that attention to this aspect outstrips conversation that can help build digital literacy in a social networking era. So, for example, John Hartley, in an appended essay in the volume, can learn based on the fact that certain sites are walled off at school (including YouTube) "that formal education's top priority is not to make them digitally literate but to `protect' them from `inappropriate' content and online predators."[8] Ensuring the safety of children and training in behavior are important. However, in an era so reliant on social networking and new forms of media, equipping youth with the necessary tools to creatively engage the new media is the most important way to offer them tools that will protect them from it. There simply is no other way, short of disconnecting youth from all media.

Great debut novel!

I empathized with Patty from the first page to the last. The ice cream scene was painfully familiar to me. Patty's not a perfect heroine, and not always pretty - in her thoughts or her actions - but always entertaining. There was a lot of depth in this debut novel and a lot of emotion. I especially admired Patty's determination, and I rooted for her all through the book. The ending is one of the best I've read. It's a terrific debut and I'm looking forward to the next James Bay novel.

What a lovely story. Like Patty I have struggled with my weight my whole life. It tells you that love is more important then anything else in the world no matter what your size. I love that there are other books about James Bay and look forward to the next one. What a wonderful summer story. Thank you Ms. Paterka.

A Gritty Life-Like Read

Growing up "the fat sister" I can relate to Patty in so many ways. It is hard when you see yourself as something different. Sam is such a great character and reminds me so much of my own husband. He is the perfect man who sees Patty as the wonderful beautiful person she truly is. Fatty Patty is a great debut book and although I will say there were times I wanted to put it down because I saw a bit too much of myself in Patty I kept reading in the hopes that Patty would see herself differently. Patty descends into to some dark places, for lack of a better description.

About the Author
Marianne Woodside, Professor Emerita, is affiliated with the Human Services, Mental Health Counseling, and Counselor Education programs at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She has taught introduction to human services, case management, methods of helping, and foundations of counselor education, and supervises practicum and internship. Her primary research interests are international human services, human service education, and case management. Dr. Woodside has served on the editorial boards for Journal of Human Service Education, American Association for Counseling and Development Journal, and Tennessee Counseling Journal. Additionally, she served as vice-president of regional development and secretary of the National Organization for Human Services Education. Dr. Woodside has published a wide range of journal articles and has an extensive record of presentations at national and international meetings. Her many awards include the Distinguished Recognition Award from the Council for Standards in Human Service Education, the Professional Development Research Award from the National Organization for Human Services Education, the Helen B. Watson Outstanding Faculty Research Award, and the Educator's Hall of Honor Award. Martin Eden, Jack London's semiautobiographical novel about a struggling young writer, is considered by many to be the author's most mature work. Personifying London's own dreams of education and literary fame as a young man in San Francisco, Martin Eden's impassioned but ultimately ineffective battle to overcome his bleak circumstances makes him one of the most memorable and poignant characters Jack London ever created. As Paul Berman points out in his Introduction, "In Martin, [London] created one of the great twisted heroes of American literature . . . a hero doomed from the outset because his own passions are bigger and more complicated than any man could bear."

A Neglected American Classic of Weight and Depth

MARTIN EDEN follows the rise and fall of a young sailor who by sheer force of will educates himself and succeeds in becoming a famous writer (this is London's autobiographical novel, published in 1909, when he was thirty-three and the most popular living writer in the world). Few readers liked it then, they found it dark and depressing after a certain point; they wanted the entertainment they were used to from London ("Come on, Jack, give us another story with dogs and snow in it!"). Not as many read it now as should, and London himself disdained the fact that it inspired many young writers without talent to follow Martin Eden's example. But it is also a valuable story about a young man maturing in his conception of love as regards the opposite sex:
"Ambition soared on mad wings, and he saw himself climbing the heights with her, pleasuring in beautiful and noble things with her. It was a soul-possession he dreamed, refined beyond any grossness, a free comradeship of spirit that he could not put into definite thought." -- The youth becomes a man.
London's prose is straightforward and vibrant, much like the author at his best. Martin Eden falls victim to the vicissitudes of his fame and fortune, much like the author at his worst (too much hard living is often given as the reason for London's death at forty). London spends a lot of time in this book criticizing American materialism in the way that materialism ought to be criticized. He also displays a certain kind of American work ethic (five hours of sleep a night, perseverance through failure, etc.) that sometimes doesn't know what to do with itself once it achieves success. We should all have that problem--just hope that we deal with it better than young Martin Eden does. A very worthwhile read.

Not his best, but close enough

"Martin Eden" is my fifth foray into the works of Jack London. Although I don't find the excitement within that was apparent in "Sea Wolf," the passion is certainly evident. I have read that "Martin Eden" inspired more bad writers to sequester themselves with paper and pencil in unheated attics than any other book, and it is easy to determine why. Eden's obsession with learning and then creating the immortal printed word -- after falling for a woman above his class in society/socialist-conscious San Francisco -- is a powerful force that London expounds convincingly. Then, without warning, the sage advice "be careful what you wish for, it may come true," rears its ugly head. London also includes a line about ghosts that should be a classic, but isn't, and his description of a suicide ranks as the best of its kind. A WORD OF WARNING: Do not read the foreward until after. It tells too much of the story and robs some of the author's intended suprises. This is unforgivable. May the publisher rot in hell.

Martin Eden: A Journey into the Interior

If you are looking for pleasant summer reading, pass this one by. It ain't pretty and it ain't pleasant, but it ranks as one of the Great American novels of all time. Was it autobiographical? You betcha. More so than most airbrushed autobiographies of our time. Jack London was the first author to awaken in me the love of the printed word. I was 9 years old. The title that awakened me was Call of the Wild. I, like Marcia and everyone else, thought that Jack London was just an aborigine, wandering around in the vast metropolis and utterly lost. Years later I read The Sea Wolf, and my opinion changed.
I no longer thought of Jack as an aborigine, but as a refined young man, rudely abducted from the civilized world and forced to accept the law of the strongest. Later still, I read Martin Eden, and I was devastated by the tortured visions of that same young man who was tranfigured by that experience and who was no longer acceptable as a member of civilized society.
