A whole other kind of theoretical physics

If I differ with the other reviews on this page, it's only about whether to think of this book as limited to polymer physics. The conventional wisdom today is to equate theoretical physics with string theory, just as a generation ago it was equated to particle physics. The conventional wisdom is wrong, as usual. This book is an elegant instance of theoretical physics. Sure, it's applied to the somewhat practical field of polymers, in which moreover one can do experiments (unlike string theory) that don't require acts of Congress to fund (unlike particle physics). But don't let that fool you -- it's theoretical physics at its most imaginative and aesthetically pleasing. Scaling arguments might seem pretty common today, but De Gennes was ahead of the curve, and the tools he needed were very modest. Seeing how he thought about the problem is what makes reading this book more than just reading a book about polymers. He later extended this brilliant theoretical re-envisioning to things like liquid crystals, granular matter, splashes, and drying drops of water (having earlier been interested in magnetism and superconductivity). If more aspiring theoreticians were to encounter this book as undergrads or as young grad students, they might realize that there's plenty of intellectual fun to be had on earth, and not just on 6-dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds.

Excellent treatise on scaling concepts!

de Gennes is one of the most eminent polymer physicists of our times, and this book is perhaps the most significant book in polymer physics. All books by this author are treasures of knowledge, concepts introduced in simple, yet elegant way. A must read for anyone who wishes to appreciate the structure and dynamics of polymeric materials!

A Must !

The late professor de Gennes was frequently described as a modern Newton. While the comparison is surely ill-grounded, de Gennes has a premium place in the pantheon of Physics for his far-fetched contributions to so many areas of physics (ranging from superconductors, to biology, and, of course, gels and polymer physics).
In the introduction to his book, Prof. de Gennes clearly states that he wrote it with the theoretically-oriented scientist as well as the experimentalist in mind. Indeed, the book was written at a time the subject was rocketting and developping at a brisk pace ; de Gennes' aim through this work was to make the many results obtained and their various theoretical interpretations available to the guys who, in the end, made all this progress possible.
Note that the book was The one to learn all that stuff, as polymer physics had a great deal flourished with the work of a group of French scientists (at the CEA lab).
The sections of this book summarize the properties of polymers and the models that were devised to explain those.
The final chapter is on the renormalization group.
On the whole, the book is indeed also a great introduction to general methods in soft condensed matter (random-walk, a little field theory, phase diagrams, and so on).
Needless to say, it has also become a classic in polymer science.
Rightly so.

Well-researched novel will appeal to rabid NBA stats fans
By Just a Cat and a Book By Her Side
Andy Glockner's book is a "behind the scenes look at the high stakes game of creating an NBA champion." It delves into the fairly recent evolution of statistics (big data analytics) and its impact on professional basketball. How is the NBA-- a league of big money and big outcomes -- using this potentially massive amount of data to its advantage? Is it the players, the coaches, the teams, the front offices looking to benefit? How can big data and statistics fit into the traditional paradigm of the NBA as we know it?

I nabbed an advanced copy of this book, because I'm a sports fan and a big NBA fan. I thought the book was going to take a look at the 2014/2015 season and how stats impacted it, but I don't feel that it exactly delivered on its promise. That's not to say it's not a good read. It's certainly enjoyable if you like basketball, particularly the NBA. If you're a fan of statistics and numbers related to your sports, you'll love the book, as it's chock full of data. In fact, so much that it reads like a term paper sometimes. My biggest issue, in fact, was that is was almost a little too dry and statistics heavy, with an outline that jumped around in organization, making it hard to follow and stay engaged. Still, the book is extremely well-researched and you'll pick up a lot of good tidbits to impress fellow sports fans.

Overall, it was amazing to read about the impact of statistics on the NBA and how what would take the video and tape guys hours (probably days ages ago) can now be compiled in seconds by companies with algorithms and computer programs. Glockner introduces to us to several of these firms, including SportsVU, and does a good job explaining their evolution. (Perhaps too good a job - it gets to be a bit much at times.)

Some of my other issues were that, at least in my ebook edition, some of the graphics were hard to read, as all the lines and charts were hard to read - the lines were basically all the same color.

To me, the book was best when Glockner mixed his use of stats with anecdotes and real stories. I'm not exactly sure billing it as a quest to find the most "perfected player" is true, or even a look at the 2014/2015 season, but the stories were fun. There's a short bit on University of Kentucky Coach Calipari's hire of Joel Justus in the analytics realm and how that led to UK's much talked about platoon system for one season - quite a fascinating portion of a chapter. Further, the Colorado State basketball program is a good anecdotal example use of SportsVU and is far less dry than the more stats heavy or less conversational chapters.

Again, the book also gets you thinking: just like any other advantage in sports, stats often help those programs with more money; for instance, the Duke Blue Devils being the only team able to use the SportsVU system in their practice facility (this stuck in my craw, being anti-Duke and all. Go 'Hoos!) It also talks about how young players are showing worse movement than ever (very scary). And, a lot of the book is mind boggling with its repercussions; for instance, a company at the combine is predicting player injuries before these kids are even in the NBA (leading to great questions about who gets that data, what do they do with it, what does it mean for the kids or the teams scouting them, etc.)

Glockner goes into the biomechanics pieces of stats, with some fun and fascinating bits weaved in. He discusses how the company P3 can tell how a player is "off" in his mechanics, for instance, with their amazing system of measurements. This leads to a great Phoenix Suns and Grant Hill anecdote and the resurrection of Grant's career (again, book had more pull to me when it was aligned with an actual team or player that made it seem more real).

The epilogue is what I thought the whole book was about (Golden State using stats to win), but was actually very brief (basically one bit about an assistant who subbed in someone). It's amazing story about how stats can alter an entire NBA finals, but goes out with a whimper.

Overall, it was a good book, but I confess I probably bumped my rating up to a 3-star simply due to my love of basketball. Some of the chapters just seem hodgepodge - as if a bunch of players were just thrown in to talk about stats with no rhyme or reason; it's interesting, but seems random and nonsensical. Are these the most perfected players we were promised? If so, it's not really made clear. The Kyle Korver story near the end of the book finally ties a lot of the book's themes together (analytics, P3, etc.) in a story form, which was interesting and compelling in its format and how I wish more of the book had been presented. Combine that with a little too many numbers for a casual sports fan and the jumping around in organization and there was definitely something lacking. Still, this well-researched novel will appeal to the rabid stats fans and those who want more history about how the burgeoning field of big data analytics is changing the NBA as we speak.

This book does an excellent job of illustrating the countless layers of analytics within the basketball world. Analytics influence the on-court product, but also prevent injuries and inform business decisions. Glockner's prose is always a pleasure to read.

Al Roker, the genial weatherman on NBC's top-rated Today show, has written a book that reads like a long chat over coffee. Light and involving, Don't Make Me Stop This Car talks frankly about fertility problems, parenting, divorce, adoption, and... 'toons. It turns out that Roker's a cartoon fanatic, and his own capable, funny drawings grace the back cover and chapter headings. In the first half of Don't Make Me Stop This Car, Roker and his wife, 20/20 correspondent Deborah Roberts, struggle to get pregnant. They conceive a child the old-fashioned way but lose it during the first trimester. Roker candidly discusses the causes of their impaired fertility: his low sperm count and his wife's plummeting progesterone levels. Key doctors are introduced (and, annoyingly, reintroduced) in the ensuing chapters before Leila is delivered via C-section in November 1998. Part two is a collection of essays on topics ranging in seriousness from Ricky Martin to racism. Roker's better with weightier subjects, such as the challenges and pleasures of adoption and foster care. And there are some compelling descriptions of his childhood that make you admire his salt-of-the-earth parents. At times the writing sounds as if Roker dictated and didn't spend much time editing. It's punctuated by exclamations that surely sound better on TV ("Yesss!" "Is this a great country, or what?" "Gotta go!"). But the informality grows less irritating as the book goes on. Ultimately, you're left with a sense of Roker as a middle-class hero--proud of his bus-driver dad but rich enough to buy fertility treatments and then decorate the baby's nursery with trinkets from the "statusphere." His voice is warm and affectionate as he describes his two daughters, Courtney and Leila, and his years of talking into the camera give him an ease behind the microphone that makes him sound as if he is chatting personally with the listener. The material itself, however, is uneven. His struggles to become a fatherAonce through infertility treatments, once through adoptionAare truly compelling, and his reflections about his own father, a bus driver who raised several foster children in addition to his own, are sweet and poignant. But when Roker talks about his own experiences of being a father, he sounds like every other proud parent in the world. The famous Today Show weatherman muses on his experiences as father of two daughters. The 49 brief chapters are neither thematically nor chronologically arranged, and though they show his self-effacing humor, they frequently ramble. While some readers might find it interesting (or perhaps disturbing) to learn the sordid details of Roker's low sperm count or a childhood spent "eating till you felt like you were going to burst," most of his observations about fatherhood are generic and hackneyed. The sharpest entry contrasts the fear-based disciplinary techniques of past generations (the title's "six little words worked for my father because we were afraid") with gentler contemporary practices like time-outs and coaching. Similar to Bill Cosby's Fatherhood (Berkeley, 1993), Roker's book offers nothing new or particularly useful. Although sincere, it is tediously lightweight and lacks the practicality of Adams Sullivan's revised The Father's Almanac (Doubleday, 1992). An optional purchase for public libraries.

Always liked you Al..now I think I love you!

The most enjoyable read I've had in a long time! I always respected and enjoyed Al as our local weatherman on the local NBC news - this the THE man you always trusted to tell you the REAL weather..well after reading the book..this is the man you're going to trust telling you about REAL life too. The candor he expresses with regard to the medical profession.. the arbitrary nature of health insurance..adoption..divorce..marriage..racism are but a few topics covered in this book. It enlightened me..it made me laugh and cry..but more than that..it made me want the book to never end. This is more than a "celebrity fluff" book. Run..don't walk and get this book..for yourself..and share it with anyone you love.

Humor and heart for parents and children

Al Roker has always been one of my favorite television personalities. He never fails to brighten my morning and get my day off to a snappy start (no matter the weather). I am not a parent (though my partner and I would like to adopt one day), but when and if the time comes, this book will be close at hand. It's heartening to know there are broadcast journalists out there who can communicate humor and heart simultaneously.

It's Not A Dr. Laura How To Parent Book But...

With the release of the paperback edition of Al's first writing venture, it reminded me that I HAD read and DO own the hardback copy of "Don't Make Me Stop The Car!". I ran through several of the reviews before sitting down to write mine.
If folks are looking for Fatherhood How To 101 or a scholarly book on the finer points of Parenting...well, you probably will be one of the folks disappointed in this book. If you are just looking for a good read in two areas 1.) Al Roker's humor and 2.)what fatherhood has been to him then this book is for YOU!
It is a relatively short book that is a very easy read. I took it to a doctor's' office appointment to read in the waiting room...Al had me cracking up and howling that I was beginning to get strange looks from others as I snickered with tears running down my face.
The book covers how he and his wife overcame the years of wanting a child...what they had to endure and go through to have and be blessed with a child. Al tells how he had to intergrate a second marriage (step-mom) when he married Deborah to his first daughter and then tell how when the Blessed event happened, how he had to intergate the elation of having a child with Deborah but keep his first daughter involved and know she would still hold a place in their hearts full of love for her. That was a TALL order for Al to be successful at...as it is for any father who has remarried and added another child to the family!
It tells of how he shares the parental duties with Deborah...something that doesn't happen (unfortunately) in every relationship and household. It was refreshing to read what it was like as a participating father from Al's side!
I give this book a strong 4 star rating. Give Al a break...it's his first venture in writing a book and overall it was a good read! Yes, there are places the pace slows down but it happens to the best of writers!
If you simply want a fun, easy, good read on fatherhood with several laughs along the way...BUY THIS BOOK! If you want scholarly on parenting...well, you'll probably be disappointed.

Mark J. P. Anson, PhD, CAIA, is a Managing Partner at Oak Hill Investment Management, LP. Dr. Anson previously served as President and Executive Director of Investment Services at Nuveen Investments, Chief Executive Officer at Hermes Pension Management Limited, and Chief Investment Officer at California Public Employees' Retirement System. He has published over 100 research articles in professional journals, has won two Best Paper Awards, is the author of six financial textbooks, and sits on the editorial boards of several financial journals.

Donald R. Chambers, PhD, CAIA, is the Associate Director of the Level 1 Curriculum at the CAIA Association and is the Walter E. Hanson/KPMG Professor of Finance at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. Dr. Chambers previously served as the Director of Alternative Investments at Karpus Investment Management.

Keith H. Black, PhD, CAIA, is the Associate Director of the Level II Curriculum at the CAIA Association. He was previously an Associate at Ennis Knupp and, before that, an Assistant Professor at Illinois Institute of Technology.

Hossein Kazemi, PhD, CAIA, is a Cofounder of and the Program Director for the CAIA Association. Informative, but not intuitive for learning purposes

This material is required reading for CAIA level 1. The book covers a lot (I learned a lot of valuable information) but the writing style could be more straightforward for learning. It is written like a research paper, not like a textbook. There are few diagrams - instead, everything is explained in lengthy paragraphs.

The book is not well-organized. There is a lot of jumping back and forth between related concepts, and the same material gets covered in several different places within the book.

My biggest issue was that there are barely any practice questions.

A great reference guide for AI

This book contains all of the material covered on the CAIA (Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst) Level 1 Exam. The material is neatly organized, and very easy to navigate, but the paper it is printed on is a bit thin, so be careful when using a highlighter as it tends to bleed through to the other side of the page quite badly.

It's study material, and it's been designed so that each section of the book matches a section on the exam. You won't be studying any unnecessary items, and by the time you're done with the book you'll know a lot more about Hedge Funds, Private Equities, and the various other types of investments that are classified "alternative investments" (you'll also find out what makes an investment "alternative"). It gives the reader a full view of how Alternative Investments work, from organization, to tax laws, right down to day-to-day operations in some cases, so that your knowledge goes far beyond that of a casual observer.

If you're taking the CAIA exam, I can't see you passing without it. If you're not taking the CAIA exam and just want to learn about AIs, you can still benefit from this manual.

Excellent book, plain explanations, worth read it even without the pressure of CAIA exam.
However I expected more examples, potentially end of chapter tests.
I definitely recommend it!
