Intensely Emotional!

Six by Tara Spears is a story that is sure to touch your heart.

Angelo finds himself a single parent, adrift in his life and lonely without the companionship of a partner. He dreams of finding more than a one night stand, but after being abruptly abandoned by his partner in what should have been the most important moment of their lives, he now doubts that he will ever be able to open himself up to the possibility of emotionally connecting with another man. In fact, he suspects that his libido may have left the day he brought his infant daughter home.

When Angelo meets Marcus, also a single parent, he is afraid of acknowledging the growing attraction between them. But Marcus has plenty of emotional baggage of his own, and as the extent of the turmoil Marcus is dealing with in his personal life comes to light, Angelo is surprised to find himself opening up his own heart in response.

Just as their romance appears to be heading towards a happy ending Angelo has a health scare that brings him to his knees emotionally, and leaves him further doubting if Marcus could ever truly love him.

Filled with love, laughter, heartache and passion. Six follows these two men on the most unexpected journey of their lives and left me feeling that I had peeked through a window into the real lives of two very special men.

Readers should be aware that this book contains steamy sex scenes, references of emotional abuse, episodes depicting child abuse and/or endangerment, and moments where the main characters reveal their deepest doubts and emotional flaws. A M/M romance that showcases life at it's highest highs and lowest lows, Six is at times heart wrenching, and shouldn't be read by those under the age of 18 or anyone that isn't willing to be emotionally pulled apart and put back together again in a whole new way.

Sweet, comfort read with LOTS going on...

This book was picked for me as a January pick-it-for-me Comfort challenge. I'm trying to figure out exactly what I think, now that I've finished... It was written well, but I think the author put too much in what adds up to basically a novella. Too much meaning, too many things going on, and like, lots of bad luck, things happening, personal obstacles, etc. An amazing value for a free story, though!

It was a sweet read, but a little too much insta-love for what I was feeling this month, I suppose. As a new author, I do feel Tara will do well, and there were very few editing issues, and the story flowed well, except for the 'too much going on' part. I think all this various story-trope also kept me from feeling connected to the MCs...I definitely just felt like an outside observer.

I did think it was interesting, and pretty much the first time I had seen a sexual enjoyment/health issue dealt with so realistically in an M/M story, and that part was done well. The kidnapping and illness of baby Toby seemed a bit over the top for me, though

The benefit of it being a free story, and a fairly long one at that, makes this what I consider a 3.5 story, rounded up for effort and content for a new author. Recommended for people that like to read about children in their M/M romances, ad for those that don't mind a touch of insta-love with a 12-year wrap up in the epilogue.

I couldn't put it down!

Tara Spears is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors! This is the second book I have read by her, both books
very deserving of 5 star ratings. After reading THE DARKER SIDE OF TREY GREY and absolutely loving it, I was glad to learn that Ms. Spears had also writen
other erotica books. I am glad SIX was the next book of hers that I tried because I was quickly sucked into the book and could not put it down. While Trey Grey was dark and gritty, the story about the the two men in SIX is sweet, endearing and touching. Luckily for us, SIX is also smoking hot!!! Seeing how well Spears can write dark erotica then completely change directions and write a very different style book is proof of how very talented she is. Tara is absolutely made to write m/m romance. AAAAA+++

no..just no!

Man, this is painful for me to write because I love Colleen and have just got around to reading this (I have a long TBR list..) and I just loathed this book. I didn't like this story one bit.

First, Tate is a completely simple minded, boy crazy moron for accepting their "relationship" in the way Miles (the jerk) laid it out. I can't stand weak heroines! Miles himself was an ass. Granted, he had a crappy past but that doesn't allow him to treat people like doormats.

Lastly, there was no romance between them. They went from strangers to sexual partners and there was zero connection other than sexual attraction between them. You didn't know Tate much, didn't catch why they were falling for each other. It really is all baffling.

I love CH and I refuse to give up on her but this..this was just painful.

Confused and disappointed

Halfway through this book, I had to come here to read the negative reviews because SOMEONE.. (Someone please) had to agree with me about this book. I couldn't be the only one thinking I had picked up some raunchy highschool supermarket book with those ridiculous covers of Fabio on them. All my girlfriends at work were raving about it, begging me to read it. So I gave in. I started realizing quickly that the characters in the book are all in their twenties, fresh out of college, which would explain why my co-workers would relate, even more so that we are all RN's, most of them back in school just like Tate. I pushed that aside (tried to), I said, ok you're a decade older, but you can relate, you were in your twenties once... You dated Pilots, you're an RN like her... Relate! So I continued. But is the author fresh out of college too? Fresh out of highschool? Im not going to lie, I moved through it pretty fast, but it's like someone else wrote on here.. Its like that train wreck you can't stop looking at. Im dissappointed in the 5 star reviews, but then again, maybe this is for the young adult reader section. And if it is, is saddens me that my 13 year old daughter is to face such literally mediocracy as she enters young adulthood.

SNOOZE FEST!! Read “Sarah’s Child” by Linda Howard instead!

I absolutely adore Colleen’s Books, but this is her worst in my opinion. I have read EVERYTHING she has published and this was a major disappointment. I think the high ratings are because of the love of her previous books. Heck, I’m giving it 2 stars because I like her other books but really it’s a 1 star at best. I am a prolific romance reader and have been for decades and knew from reading her books that she has a great talent for writing romance. That being said, I think this was a dull book and the only reason I finished it was because I adored her other books. I will continue to buy her books because we can’t hit a home run or get on base every time we go up to bat. But I hope her next one will make up for this dud.

The characters were flat and the secondary character we blah at best. If this had been her first book out, we would never have heard of her. I’m just saying. Linda Howard wrote a Silhouette Special Edition in 1985 (that has a similar story line) that is way more developed than this. I don’t even think this had enough depth to be shortened to a novella. I think CHoover got caught up in trying to give us an emotional incident book (death, sickness, disability, abuse, etc.) instead of just writing a good book that has a major incident in it. Catherine Anderson does great at incident books and has for a while. I also think Mia Sheridan is good at incident books. The sex scenes were horrendously boring! I’ve read series romance books with better-written sex/love scenes in them (i.e Harlequin Blaze, Harlequin presents/Lynne Graham).

I would not recommend this book to anyone that hasn’t read any of her other books.

Veteran ghostwriter and coauthor Whitney (Where Have All the Leaders Gone?) now writes in her own voice about her brother Jim Schuler, a vet who served three tours in Vietnam and died penniless and alone in 2001 at age 53. Whitney also offers her take on many issues—such as PTSD, veterans' benefits and homelessness— affecting American veterans of wars from WWI to Iraq and Afghanistan. Whitney presents little that is new on these subjects. The parts of the book dealing with her brother and family are more fully realized, although much of that narrative, including Jim Schuler's service in Vietnam and his postwar army career, is based mostly on speculation since he had little contact with his estranged family. Whitney herself was adamantly against the Vietnam War, something her troubled brother never forgot or forgave. Whitney thus only partially succeeds in her mission to find her brother, and her account fails to meet the standard of the one invoked in the title, Gen. Great Insights!

Author Catherine Whitney has given this world an inspired and insightful look at veterans. In her book, "Soldiers Once", she uses her experiences and the emotional issues she had from her brother's life and death, as a vehicle for giving us a larger understanding of veterans. She may have been motivated in the beginning, to search and gain a better understanding of her brother's war experiences and why he was like he was when he came back home. However, in the end, she discovers a much greater voice for others and opens the door for many like herself.

The book is moving and emotionally honest. I found that her personal journey of trying to understand what happened to her brother should resonate for so many others. She digs up the emotional ghosts and visits the past, as she moves the reader spiritually forward as she grows more aware of what many veterans had to deal with and still do.

The book would make a thoughtful gift to anyone who has a veteran in their family that is dealing with PTSD, or other issues related to war. I believe she will gain overwhelming support from veterans like myself, who found this work to be a meaningful and significant contribution to a short list of books which treat veterans with the respect and dignity that have earned. She has honored not only her brother but many other veterans and for this alone the book would have had my personal endorsement. The book is well written, thoughtful, sensitive and avoids all those pit falls of many self-serving non-fictional book. This book will be a positive force in the healing of others.

A Soldier Once is a sad tribute to Jim Schuler who fought for his country in Vietnam. The book explains the conflicts the war caused in families during that 60's and 70's.

The author's current political positions distracted me from the story of her brother, Jim Schuler, who had many fine qualities. Unfortunately, Jim Schuler isolated himself from other people and did not reach out to his family, who would have helped him if he had given them a chance. His neighbors, who cared for him were also excluded from his life.

I would like to have known more about Jim Schuler. Did he receive help from other veterans? The author could have interviewed more people who knew Jim and spent less time focused on her political agenda.

The author may get some answers from publishing this book. I hope for more closure for her and her family.

An eye opener

I am of the generation that did not serve in the military: post-Korea, pre-Viet Nam. My experience with the soldier's life is very limited. This book is a real eye-opener and should be required reading for those who don't know, for those who did know and have forgotten, and for those who know and do nothing.

More than an expose of the neglect of returning military men and women, Soldiers Once reads as a gripping search by a woman for her brother. And on this journey, Whitney discovers as much about herself as she does her brother. Rarely have I read a book so informative and moving.
