HATED some parts but this books deserves 5 stars!

This book was written almost 30 years ago?!! I was astonished when I read that, because this book reads like a modern day book, a VERY well written modern day novel.

I must admit, I hate romance novels with bad hero/heroines and after reading the reviews here, I almost passed on it. Well let me tell you, I am glad I tried it. Up most, what you gotta keep in mind is, this can NOT be considered a "romance" book.. you'll HATE it if you start this book thinking that. You must have an open mind, know that in this book you'll see the heroine abused horribly again, and again... raped, kidnapped, horrible hero who cheats EVERY other day ( I swear ), and the heroine puts up with it. This makes it worse, where was the heroine's pride? Yep, your typical 70s book. I remember one scene, SPOILER HERE :

After the hero kidnaps the heroine, he takes her to a whore house to hide her, he then goes to another room to shower and to have sex with one of the girls and the heroine is right next door, he then comes in the room see's she's been crying, asleep... he thinks about having sex with her too, right after having sex with a whore... that pissed me off! LOL, yes, horrible hero, and there were many, many scenes like this here, he was a male slut!

There are so many reviews here so read those for plots I wont go into that... You will enjoy this dark "fiction" novel with a dark hero and a beautiful heroine who will do anything and put up with anything for her love for this undeserving hero ( imho ). That part drove me nuts...

Nevertheless, this book deserves 5 stars because I was thoroughly entertained, I seriously could NOT put this hateful, woman degrading novel down, I became addicted to this epic novel mid way. There are so many twists, so many awful things the hero does and the heroine goes through that will make you grind your teeth and yet, YOU will sit there losing sleep because you just gotta read another page....

IT WAS THAT GOOD.. Yes, I hated this book as a female reader but damn, what a novel.

Entertaining But Not For Everyone

Sweet Savage Love is about a naive girl full of romantic fancies who confronts the more lurid realities of life and love. Ginny is caught in more situations than some readers might find easy to swallow. There is also an element of forced seduction involving Ginny and Steve Morgan that readers might find offensive. However, there is a deep, unrecognized attraction between the hero and heroine that is not present in Ginny's other encounters. It is not mature love at first. However, most love takes time to grow. The novel is set in the background of the American Southwest and in Mexico during the rebellion against the Emperor Maximillian. The reader gets a small taste of history and the feel for the injustices and turmoil which resulted in this war. However, this is primarily a romance novel to entertain. Steve and Ginny both go through a lot but this does occur during a tumultous (sp?) time in history. Ginny's morals or lack thereof may sour some readers but she is the product of her upbringing and her experiences. Steve Morgans liasons with women are also not high up on the moral ladder but he is the typical male with double standards of whom there are plenty today. Sweet Savage Love is a novel to be enjoyed and not to be analyzed too seriously. Another good Rosemary Rogers novels which is completely separate from Steve and Ginny is The Wildest Heart. This second novel is not quite a dramatic as Sweet Savage Love. Readers might find it a bit easier to swallow.

The Romance Classic, A Publishing Phenomenon

As a romance writer, I am revisiting the classics that launched the entire powerful arm of publishing, (the romance genre), and I ordered an old original copy of "Sweet Savage Love." Wow. No wonder this sold millions and was imitated. What a masterfully written book. Exciting and completely plunges a reader into this world. Told in multiple POV's, loaded with adverbs, yet still penned with clarity, this story happens in parts of the U.S. and in Mexico, during the Civil War era. Ginny, the heroine, is half-French, half-American, and Steve Morgan, the dark hero, is half-American, half-Hispanic. The riveting non-stop action spans all their adventures and suffering, and the dysfunctional, wildly physical nature between the leads. Morgan is an unapologetic rake, treating women like used Kleenex, but to me, the guy's harsh gunslinger / mercenary lifestyle fits his character. He wouldn't whistle Yanni tunes in a woman's ear, or offer to wash the dishes while she rests in a recliner. He's selfish and calculating, an adrenaline junkie. Ginny has perhaps the bigger character arc, and she endures horrors when she is captured and forced into prostitution, (white slavery). That part of the book required teeth-gritting. In the end, I found Ginny had more steel than Steve, moving from a Paris Hilton type of pampered existence in the opening, and emerging as a strong, multi-faceted woman who won't back down from working hard. She gets lost in her gypsy dancing. She's strong, yet sensuous, enjoys her seductive power over men, eventually, after recovering from the brutality she suffers. A complete foil for the heartless Steve, who, in spite of himself, grows attached to her - even thinks of her when he's with other women. He is the one a reader gets frustrated with, because Ginny is resourceful, catches on fast, and he can't "see" her value, because he can't form normal emotional attachments. But what a reader discovers, is the pages fly by and you want to see these two together, even as they rant (lots of exclamation points!) and tear off their clothes with passion. It's a no-holds-barred, tough, unrelenting, and to me - honest. This was a harsh landscape, not genteel or civilized. Throughout most of recorded human history, women were treated slightly above cattle. (I exaggerate, maybe a tad better than that - but no real rights)

Plus, just watch an episode of "Mad Men" and how women were treated in the 1960's. That's just a quick glimpse of how women could be dismissed.

Ginny stabs Steve when he tries to take her by force, and she is raped, multiple times. Truly horrifying. I recall seeing a WWII book and an image of a beautiful Jewish girl who was raped in the streets by German soldiers. This exploitation has happened throughout history. "Sweet Savage" delivers an unpleasant dose of reality.

It doesn't make it right, or wrong, it's just a part of human brutality. Look what the Romans did to people in their Coliseum.

Newer romances have none of the suffering these characters endure, they are more politically correct, and I hate to say it, bland... essentially forgettable. This can seem way over-the-top for more refined tastes. Me, I like all kinds of books, ugly, raw, pretty, sensitive, etc. "Jane Eyre" is my favorite romance - this is the antithesis to the intellect Jane and tortured, impassioned Rochester, which are more cerebral characters and reflect the setting.

I thought this passage was especially powerful:

"Steve Morgan, who had always prided himself on his cold detachment from emotional entanglements now found, as he galloped toward Zacatecas, that the prospect of seeing Ginny again was almost worth facing a firing squad for. If they were going to execute him in any case, they would probably allow him a few minutes alone with her. He could take her in his arms and taste the wonderful texture of her lips again, and feel her small, perfectly shaped breasts pressing against his chest. He'd tell her -- yes, what did it matter now? Before they killed him, he'd tell her he loved her."

But the pleas for help never ended. Dutch commandoes met at the Schoorls’ kitchen table, and shot-down Allied pilots shared breakfast with their five children. Jews continually arrived at the Schoorls’ farm unannounced in the dark of night. The couple eventually filled their two homes with “guests.” When there was no room left, they searched the countryside for more hiding places—addresses as they called them. One hundred forty thousand Jews lived in Holland before the war, fewer than 10,000 would survive. This is the story of how a handful of those survivors endured, a story that invites the reader to consider the price paid to do—in the words of Dr. Schoorl—“what any man should do.”

I just finished this wonderful book which has a story like no other

I just finished this wonderful book which has a story like no other. I could not put this book down and have passed it along to its next captivated reader. I'm so jealous.

What struck me most about the story was the endurance of the human spirit and the incredible courage of so many people in the communities around Holland in hiding their Jewish brothers & sisters despite their own threat of being sent to the concentration camps if discovered. I was also struck by the honesty of the author as he not only shared his personal feelings toward his grandmother but also retold the very human failings of the most influential heroes in the book of whom none of the people in hiding would have survived. The author most likely would not be here today had it not been for those heroes. Read this book.

A captivating story

A wonderfully written book in which the author transports you back to war time Holland. The pictures he paints with his words bring it all vividly to your mind as you become aquainted with the Schoorl family and their quest to help save as many Jewish families as possible. Such a captivating story that I had a hard time putting the book down until it was finished.

A Story With Reading

After reading the first 90 pages I realized that I would have to limit myself to 30 minutes a day, only so that I would savor each limited reading session like small servings of an amazing meal. Mr. Briejer weaves a complex and vast history into a tight historical narrative. While talent is clearly present in the writing, it's the deep level of craftsmanship that emanates from each chapter. The accuracy and emotion conveyed could only have been accomplished with long and deep research, which this book has plenty.

Through the storyline Mr. Briejer moves through moments of the narrative with great easy and artistry. This gives the reader an experience of parallel stories with their own yet connected feelings about what it means to do the right thing, regardless of rights or entitlements, a character trait vastly lacking in todays modern american culture.

It is rare that I finish a book feeling so pleased, a historical narrative a keen to John Krakour and "Under The Banner of Heaven". The work is lean, clean and devoid of filler, yet is so powerful in its brevity it leaves space for the reader to participate in this most magnificant story.

This is a wonderful read and has a message that is timeless and vital to remember.

Facercise can work wonders if done properly and consistently

I had to write to say how wonderful the Facercise program really is. I'm a 37 year old single woman who has lost 10 years off her face thanks to Carole Maggio! When I first purchased her book I didn't think it was possible to realize these results, but thankfully -- time has proven me wrong! The exercises are easy to do and very portable. When I travel, I just bring along my "Walkman" and do them in my hotel room or where ever I'm staying. The new me has created quite a stir in my personal life, as well as in my business career. I'm constantly complimented on how great I look even when I DON'T have on makeup -- now that's telling you something. Anyone who has had a bad experience with this program is someone who either a) didn't follow the program to a tee (doing the exercises 2X a day, each day and using proper form) or b) overworked their facial muscles by doing the exercises too many times each day, thereby seeing some bad results. When personal trainers train people in weight lifting, they have them rest certain body parts by alternating their routines. This way, the body has time to rest and repair and build larger stronger muscles. Facercise works the same way, only the muscles of the face are much smaller.

GREAT BOOK! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING RESULTS.

Just like the stock market. I put in a small investment and got a great return. I purchased Carole's book and read it from cover to cover. I really didn't expect to get the quick results in a few short weeks. But seeing is believing. I apply the exercises every morning before I go to work following the illustrations in the book. I am so impressed with the results, that I plan to purchase the video. I read in the review section here that the video greatly enhances the program.
I also want to point out that I am a hairdresser in Beverly Hills, CA, and I thought I had seen everyting when it came to plastic surgery, and all the new techniques that are out there. I saw a few of my clients and thought they had had their faces done. Not so. They were doing FACERCISE. That is how I was introduced to the program and have been doing it myself, and many of my clients have noticed a difference. I'm sold and so are many of my clients.

Seeing really is believing!

I am a salon owner in Los Angeles and I have had a number of clients that have been talking about starting this program called Facercise. I thought it sounded a little strange at first untill one of my clients came in after I haden't seen her for about two months, I thought she had plastic surgery and asked about it. (she is a friend) She was excited to see that I could see a huge change in her face, and said that she has been getting compliments on how she looks from people in her workplace and everyone keeps asking her if she got a new hairtcut, new makeup, what did you do? This is proof enough for me that if you work out properly and consistently, your body looks great, so why not your face muscles too? I am starting the program immediately and am ordering the video as well. My salon now has the Facercise book on our reception table so all my clients can start to look and feel their absolute best. I know you can to.

For the love of calling a plant by it's real name

I have guarded a 1950's publication of this book for many many years and stumbled across this new 2010 republication. As an avid gardener and and lover of plants, it's important to ask the nursery for the correct plant. (how many varieties of oak trees are there?) If I kill the pronunciation, the nurserymen squint up their eyes or laugh before asking if I'd like to follow them and point it out, if I can. If I pronounce it correctly they're impressed and I get great service as well as a terrific plant.

The pronouncing dictionary was great, a little pricy for its size, but great non the less.
Also is an easy size to carry with you to pronounce correctly the botanical names when you do not have a romance language background. It was a good purchase.

Richard Knaak always does a good job on these books and this one is no exception. It is somewhat irritating that it is being done in several small segments instead of all at once. It would have nice to read the entire storyline as opposed to just a few chapters.

Quick read

I enjoyed this even though it was short. Cannot wait until book II comes out next month. I'm a huge lore fan and have all the novels, comics, short stories, graphic novels, etc and this was fun. If you are confused with this book, read Thrall: Twilight of the Aspects and then read the short story Charge of the Aspects. This short story can be found on the wow website under lore and short stories. I hope that helps and you all enjoy this as much as I!

Suddenly I understand the antipathy for Knaak's Warcraft books

I'm writing this review having just finished the fifth part of the series/novel chunks/whatever you want to call it, and I'm looking at the work as a whole. I came into it as a fan of Knaak, having enjoyed his work since the Dragonlance and Dragonrealm days. I've often heard people denigrate him for his Warcraft novels, which puzzled me. I wasn't pleased with some of the stuff in Wolfheart, but having now read Dawn of the Aspects, I understand why people hate on his books so much.

From the start, his characterizations are awful and inconsistent with other presentations of the characters. I haven't read the older Warcraft novels, so perhaps how Kalecgos was portrayed matches how he was at some point in the novels, but it certainly doesn't match where he and Jaina ended up at the end of Tides of War, which this follows both in publication date and the lore timeline. The little we see of modern day Alexstraza doesn't really match where she should be either. She attempted to withdraw from the world following Korialstraz's death. For her to do so again so quickly (especially quickly for a creature who has existed for at least ten thousand years) is ridiculous.

There are logical inconsistencies that are obnoxious as well and threw me out of what little immersion I was able to grasp from the story. For example, it's declared that the dragons are now infertile. Why would five individual dragons losing extra special powers (that of being the Aspects) render the entire species infertile? They are not the only dragons around, nor is it suggested that they are. The Aspects were not the only ones of their flights to reproduce either. It makes no sense at all. The various wars of the time during World of Warcraft has decimated their numbers, to be sure, but to suggest that there will be no more fertile eggs laid ever, from a species that was previously extremely fecund (witness the vast number of whelps present in the game), is ridiculous. There are other examples, ranging from small, but extremely stupid (Kalecgos finding the vision of another dragon ripping hungrily into a fish to be disturbing. He's a predator too, he'd eat in a similar fashion!), to huge (the big bad is described as having numerous functional limbs emerging from his body, but those left no evidence such as bones behind).

The conclusion seemed rather abrupt and rushed. I was 64% of the way through the fifth part when I realized how close I was to the end with no conclusion in sight. The story ends at about 92% (a huge section at the back of each part is given to repeating a bunch of stuff about World of Warcraft, which seems a bit silly, since who else would be reading these books?) It feels a bit off to have almost 10% of each chunk we are paying for not be part of the story.

While I appreciated the book being split up into parts instead of being asked to pay the ridiculous $10-15 they demand for each full e-book all at once (yeah, it ended up being about the same pricewise, but it felt better in little chunks), I would recommend staying far, far away. The time travel tropes are way overdone in Warcraft and the associated novels anyway, and this is so poorly written that it's not worth the frustration trying to make sense of it (hint: it doesn't) brings. In recognition of the diverse career interests of our students, Technical Drawing 101 includes projects in which students create working drawings for a mechanical assembly as well as for an architectural project. We include architectural drawing because our experience has shown that many (if not most) first-semester drafting students are interested in careers in the architectural design field, and that a traditional technical drawing text, which focuses solely on mechanical drawing projects, holds little interest for these students. The multidisciplinary approach of this text and its supporting materials is intended to broaden the appeal of the curriculum and increase student interest and, it is hoped, future enrollments.

Fun, Informative and Easy to Follow

I loved reading this book because it's full of cultural and historical foundations of Polish history and heritage. For a native Pole raised in the US, this is a valuable resource. The history sections are quite extensive and convey the birth and growth of Poland in a fine, consistent manner. Poland has a rich history which can be hard to understand in order. This book definitely makes it easy. However, the pop culture/music sections missed some of the most amazing and influential people during the 50's through 90's. Andrzej Rosiewicz? Maryla Rodowicz? Wilki?

Still, worth the read and will keep you going back with great suggestions for further research.

If you are interested in reading philosopher's, it's okay. My teacher (who knows Latin) said the book was translated weird, but it was still a fairly okay read. Definitely would not have bought it if it wasn't for class.

A pretty good anthology

"From Plato to Derrida" provides portions of a significant number of the writings of the major philosophers past and present in one large volume. While one might quibble here and there with why a particular philosopher is represented and another is not, or why a certain portion of a philosophical work is included at the expense of another section of that same work, for the most part the truly crucial texts in the history of philosophy are found in this volume. In addition, the editor provides a helpful introduction to the writings of each philosopher whose works have been anthologized. As such, it would be an excellent primary-source text for a history of philosophy class. I would not recommend it for the typical introduction to philosophy class, since many of the selections require some prior familiarity with the issues of philosophy to really understand adequately.

Some will also regard the fact that the editor has chosen to present various "selections" from longer works as a drawback, since this procedure inevitably leaves out certain arguments that may be crucial to understanding the philosopher's overall thesis. However, it is hard to see how this can be avoided in an anthology of this sort.

All in all, I would recommend "From Plato to Derrida" as a pretty good anthology at a relatively affordable price.

Excellent Introduction to Philosophy Text

If you teach Introduction to Philosophy using a historical approach, this is the text I recommend. I used "The Philosophic Classics 2nd edition, From Plato to Nietzsche" for my classes and was looking for a text with the same basic works with some more contemporary materials. I find the updated 3rd edition, "From Plato to Derrida" the perfect solution. Instead of having to look through more textbooks for the right stuff, this is it.
