A wealth of good information.
By Eric Wilson
This book is a must read for anyone interested in understanding demisexuality whether you're demi or know someone who is. It's well written and very informative which is important because demi- and asexuality aren't generally well understood or accepted.(for example: my computer keeps highlighting demisexuality as a spelling error as I'm typing this)

Identity politics
By Ashtar Command
“All About Demisexuality” is a difficult e-book to review. The pseudonymous author, who calls herself Arf, tries to explain the ins and outs of “demisexuality”. It can be seen as a sexual orientation, or indeed the lack of one, since demisexuality is said to be part of the “asexual spectrum”. Above all, it seems to be a peculiar Queer identity, and hence part of the “identity politics” of the contemporary left-liberal (or Left Coast) scene. Demisexuals even have a flag of their own, depicted on the front cover of this e-booklet! The difficulty lies in Arf's confused description of what demisexuality is supposed to be. Perhaps demisexuals *are* confused, but pointing that out could be seen as insensitive. Paradoxically, it's also possible that many demisexuals are quite normal (they are, so to speak, on the “normal diversity spectrum” sexually speaking), but apparently that too could be seen as insensitive, since it's said to “invalidate” their experiences. This review is written from the perspective of someone who doesn't consider himself demisexual and who sincerely doesn't understand...

On the face of it, demisexuality is easy to define. It means that a person only feels sexual attraction towards another person with whom they have developed a deep emotional bond. In other words, demisexuals aren't attracted to just any luscious blonde female (or muscular male, or exotically clad trans-person) who happens to cross their way, nor are they attracted to pop stars or centerfold girls they haven't even met. But is this really so unusual? I suspect that demisexuality in *this* sense is relatively common, and that it has been erased due to the obsession with all things sexual (promiscuous and perverted sex in particular) characteristic of modern or postmodern Western culture. In such a climate, “demisexuals” are bound to feel alienated.

However, as the booklet progresses, the reader starts to wonder what exactly is being described. Apparently, demisexuals can masturbate, watch porn, feel a strong desire for sex, engage in nude cuddling, have kinky fetishes and even engage in penetrative or oral sex “for the joy of the physical pleasure” (i.e. without the emotional bond mentioned above) without losing their status as demisexuals in good standing! But if so, what on earth is the difference between a demisexual and a normally sexual person (or even an over-sexed one)? A person who whips casual partners for the joy of kinky pleasure doesn't strike me as being on any “asexual” spectrum at all… Other sections of “All About Demisexuality” imply that most demisexuals are either completely indifferent towards sex, or find it highly repulsive. This seems to be yet another phenomenon, not necessarily connected to the emotional-bonding demisexuals and completely unconnected to the physical pleasure/kink patrol.

Finally, one gets a strong feeling when reading Arf's descriptions that many demisexuals are socially awkward or extremely unsure of their feelings. The pamphlet, written by a young adult, seems geared towards teenagers at the very threshold of puberty, who for whatever reason don't understand what's happening to them. Arf believes that both neurotypicals and autists can be demisexual, which I suppose is true (no matter how you define the term), but it's hard not to suspect that autism might nevertheless be a cause in many cases. Schizoid Personality Disorder is also strikingly similar to at least some descriptions of demisexuality found in this booklet.

Ultimately, however, my main objection to “All About Demisexuality” is the insistence that we are dealing with yet another “identity” or “minority” which wants to be recognized alongside all the others, presumably as a subset of the Queer category, or perhaps as an independent group alongside other sexual minorities (as in the expressions LGBTIA, LGBTIQAP, LGBTQIA and other variants where the “A” sometimes stands for the asexual spectrum). I admit that I consider this particular kind of liberal politics (if that's what it is) deeply problematic, even somewhat disturbing. One of many objections I have is the “special snowflake” factor, where everyone declares him/her/xerself a demisexual since that's the cool thing to do. In other words, we are dealing with subcultures (which are fluid) rather than real, essential personality types.

“All About Demisexuality” is well-written and probably must reading if you want to know how self-identified demisexuals view themselves (it seems to be the only such pamphlet available), but I admit that it's underlying thesis didn't convince me…

Architectural Space in Ancient Greece, by Constantinos A. Doxiadis

Doxiadis is best known as an architect-planner, as a consultant with an international clientele, as something of a prophet whose outlook is focused on man's worldwide future. But here, in his first major study, originally published in German in 1937, Doxiadis looks back into the past, to the architectural roots of his native Greece.

He works out a theory that accounts for the seemingly unordered layout of the buildings in ancient Greek sacred precincts, proposing that the spatial relationships between the buildings were strictly determined according to a plan.

Doxiadis examines in detail nearly thirty sites, charts their layouts, and presents relevant linear and angular measurements. Numerous site plans and about forty halftones complement the text. The full references include many recent sources. The trim size of the book itself is proportioned by means of the golden section.

A Unified Field Theory of Greek Architectural Planning
By Theseus
An important book from C.A. Doxiadis, an urban planner, guru of cities, architect (the most important architect in the history of Islamabad), internationalist, visionary, futurist, and the father of Ekistics.

184 pp, with about 60% of the book consisting of b&w illustrations (photos, plans, elevations, recreations, tables.)

The book advances the theory that "the Greeks employed a uniform system in arranging their buildings...man's viewpoint related the buildings not only to each other, but also to the landscape...." He rather boldly puts forward a theory stating that the "seemingly unordered layout of the buildings in ancient Greek sacred precincts" were strictly organized according to a master plan. And he uses numbers (ah, how the ancients loved numbers and proportions!) to demonstrate his points.

Significantly, Doxiadis examines not merely the prime architectural gems in the Greek city-states, but looks at over 25 different sites, scattered far and wide in the ancient Hellenic world.

This is book which shows more than it tells, being loaded with illustrations.

Another great book from the artist
By Willow Eaton
I was so excited to learn Dan Reeder had written another book. I own all of Dan's books, and use them frequently for reference during my own creative process.

Have you ever purchased an art book that you hoped would give you instructions on how create the way the artist does, only to find the book is just ego-stroking for the artist and of very little use to you? Well, that won't happen with this book, or any of Dan Reeder's books, for that matter. Dan is a very generous artist. He has a strong online presence, and shares his techniques, tips, and clever sense of humor freely.

This book shows you step-by-step, from start to finish, how to create two magnificent dragon art pieces: the cover dragon and a dragon head trophy. Dan's instructions are clear and concise. He's elaborated on many points from the book's previous version. He encourages you along the way to create your own piece of art, and to not worry about it looking like his. He also keeps you entertained by tucking away little hidden gems of humor (how DID Riley get in the bathtub?). He tells you where you may become frustrated--such as with the application of a gazillion scales--but, encourages you to stick with it because the end result will be so worth it.

This book, like Dan's other books, is a gem. An indispensable addition to your artistic library. It is as visually appealing as it is informative. Buy the book, make a dragon, hang it in your house, impress yourself, your friends, and family with your talent. And, don't forget to tell them Dan showed you how.

In 2003-04, Arsenal overcame every conceivable challenge to complete a 38-game league without a single loss. It was a feat unequalled in modern football. But for Arsene Wenger's 'Invincibles', a team including legends Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp, it was a challenge that went far beyond sport. Based on exclusive players interviews, this definitive book relives the pivotal games and moments, and allows the Invincibles to tell their own story. It takes readers inside the locker room, to reveal the teamwork, the psychology and the struggle behind one of the greatest teams in history.

Review
Delightful ... a football book that takes the team not the stars as its starting point -- David Goldblatt Guardian This book is so full of exclusive interviews you'll soon feel like part of the squad. A worthy tribute to one of English football's best ever teams, it makes you long for one more game at Highbury Shortlist Unbeatable insight. The inside story of one of English football's greatest teams -- Henry Winter Daily Telegraph Perceptive and well-wrought ... Provides all-areas access to the inner workings and passions of a top club and a famous team -- Sunday Times, Books of the Year The story of an amazing season wonderfully told through the eyes of the men who made it happen. I can't recommend it highly enough -- Andrew Mangan Arseblog Fascinating for any sports fan and truly a gold mine for Arsenal supporters Alan Davies A fascinating and engrossing read from start to finish. Provides wonderful insight and anecdotes as well as revealing the dynamics and determination from within the dressing room -- John Cross Daily Mirror I picked it up and couldn't put it down. Brilliantly depicts a piece of football history David Dein, Arsenal Vice-Chairman (1983-2007) This is research at its riveting best. My only complaint about the book is that it had to end -- Patrick Barclay, author of The Life and Times of Herbert Chapman If you were there in 71 and/or 2004, buy the book. If only now do you appreciate that we probably had four of the six best payers on the planet back then, buy the book and read their words. Let me make it simple. If you are an Arsenal supporter, buy the book -- Goonerholic This is a book that contains some of the most evocative prose I have encountered in a book about football and without doubt solidifies Lawrence's place in the very top tier of sports writing in English. The story and characters are fascinating enough, but it is how they come to life and dance in Lawrence's writing that makes this book such a wonderful telling of an incredible tale Huffington Post Lawrence is a writer who will help the reader to appreciate the football on the pitch with an understanding of how the game is played few can match. At the same time she never fails to appreciate the passion that makes us fans Morning Star A gripping account of Arsenal's undefeated title winning season of 2003/4 -- Owen Gibson Guardian

About the Author

Amy Knows.
By homa afzali
Fantastic book. It was great to re-live that season through the eyes of the players and manager. All woven seamlessly on the page by Mrs Lawrence. It's also a reminder of why I don't want this ride with Wenger to end yet. He and these players gave us fans something we'll never forget. It's well worth the barren spell to have one season like that.

Good book for any player willing to be a winner
By Geoffrey Kossami
As an Arsenal fan, this book has shown me all the secrets behind that big winning team.

It tells you very much about how mental strength and intelligence plays a huge part in winning things. Talent can be an added advantage but super mental strength is fundamental for success. This team had it all in every department. And teamwork will simply seal it for you with such strength.

I encourage every Arsenal player of the future generations to read this book and learn how to win. The same can also be learned by any other individual who want a winning character !

A little repetitive
By Sir George
Huge Arsenal fan myself. This book is an interesting insight behind the scenes. It is also a book that could be half the length if you cut out all the repetition ("this was the best team I ever played with" - "we all worked for each other"). It is one of those uncritical books that just gets a bit too back-slappy in the long run.

Fun, sexy, and an entertaining read!
By Sarah W
Nancy Warren has done it again. She just keeps getting better and better and her latest Harlequin Temptation Underneath it All showcases her talent.

When Darren Kaiser becomes Manhattan's most sought after bachelor, he needs to escape. He can't stand the women chasing him, leaving him flowers and candy and proposing to him. He wants out of it all, so he quits Kaiser Image Makers, his father's company, and moves incognito to Seattle where he starts working on his computer programming business, designing a program to help children learn to read.

Below his apartment lives Kate Monahan, a beauty consultant and high school drop out. She is busy saving all the money she can in order to finish high school and then move on to college. She isn't thrilled with her new neighbor Dean (aka Darren). He seems to be a bit of a jerk, ignoring her polite greetings and acting like... well like a dork. He wears bright Hawaiin print shirts and has thick glasses and she can't get over the impression that she has seen him somewhere.

Soon though, Kate sees that underneath it all, Dean is a great guy. They build up a strong friendship, but both can't help the strong attraction they have to each other. On the night of her birthday party, things reach a boiling point between them and they make love. They can't get enough of each other, and Darren finds that he wants to relinquish his bachelor status if only Kate will agree to stay in his life. But he knows time is running short. What if she finds out the truth, that dorky Dean is really hunky and rich playboy Darren Kaiser? Will she still love him?

What I really loved about this book was how natural the relationship between Darren and Kate was. They started off as friends but saw that they desired something more with each other. This was not a rushed relationship, Nancy Warren did a great job of showing their evolving relationship. I also just plain loved the characters. Kate was so determined to make herself better, to try to improver her life, even after some bad breaks. Darren wanted to be there to help her. He might have started off as a playboy, but by the end of the book it was obvious what a caring and loving man he was. He had just never let that side of him show.

This was a great read, very fast, but very enjoyable. Nancy Warren has joined my list of must-buy romance writers.

fun contemporary romance
By A Customer
Wealthy executive Darren Kaiser loves the perks of single life living in the exclusive part of New York until he is named Manhattan Match of the Year by Matchmaker Magazine with a national audience of millions. Not long afterward every female from eight to eighty wants apiece of this hunk so Darren, sick of the stalking, decides to go into hiding.

Darren goes from the island's most eligible bachelor to computer geek Dean Edgar living in a lower middle class tenement. However, he finds one positive besides avoiding the female horde when he clumsily meets his neighbor hair dresser Kate Monahan and her younger brother Huey. As Dean and Kate fall in love, her worries how she will react to the truth especially when she believes that Kaiser is a wastrel playboy.

UNDERNEATH IT ALL is a fun contemporary romance starring two delightful protagonists. Darren as a beleaguered Dean makes the tale hum as he escapes the female army only to fall in love as his alter ego and confused by feeling he wants the working class Kate to love the nerd as much as the hunk. Fans will think of Maid to Order when they have a good time with Nancy Warren's fine tale.

underneath it all.....
By SuzyQ
New York executive Darren Kaiser has it all - looks, money, women. Since being voted Bachelor of the Year by a national magazine, he's ready to disappear...and moving to Seattle disguised as a nerd is just the way to keep his identity a secret. But he hasn't counted on meeting his gorgeous neighbor Kate - a women he'd gladly bare all to....

When Kate Monahan meets "Dean" she's not sure what to think of him. Even though they got off on the wrong foot, she know's he's a nice guy. She just wishes that he would lose his geeky clothes so she can see the sexy body he's hiding underneath them. When Darren reveals the truth to Kate, will she still want the man underneath it all? Read to find out.

Gates of Fire: An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae, by Steven Pressfield

The national bestseller!

At Thermopylae, a rocky mountain pass in northern Greece, the feared and admired Spartan soldiers stood three hundred strong. Theirs was a suicide mission, to hold the pass against the invading millions of the mighty Persian army.

Day after bloody day they withstood the terrible onslaught, buying time for the Greeks to rally their forces. Born into a cult of spiritual courage, physical endurance, and unmatched battle skill, the Spartans would be remembered for the greatest military stand in history--one that would not end until the rocks were awash with blood, leaving only one gravely injured Spartan squire to tell the tale....

Amazon.com Review
Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, that here obedient to their laws we lie.

Thus reads an ancient stone at Thermopylae in northern Greece, the site of one of the world's greatest battles for freedom. Here, in 480 B.C., on a narrow mountain pass above the crystalline Aegean, 300 Spartan knights and their allies faced the massive forces of Xerxes, King of Persia. From the start, there was no question but that the Spartans would perish. In Gates of Fire, however, Steven Pressfield makes their courageous defense--and eventual extinction--unbearably suspenseful.

In the tradition of Mary Renault, this historical novel unfolds in flashback. Xeo, the sole Spartan survivor of Thermopylae, has been captured by the Persians, and Xerxes himself presses his young captive to reveal how his tiny cohort kept more than 100,000 Persians at bay for a week. Xeo, however, begins at the beginning, when his childhood home in northern Greece was overrun and he escaped to Sparta. There he is drafted into the elite Spartan guard and rigorously schooled in the art of war--an education brutal enough to destroy half the students, but (oddly enough) not without humor: "The more miserable the conditions, the more convulsing the jokes became, or at least that's how it seems," Xeo recalls. His companions in arms are Alexandros, a gentle boy who turns out to be the most courageous of all, and Rooster, an angry, half-Messenian youth.

Pressfield's descriptions of war are breathtaking in their immediacy. They are also meticulously assembled out of physical detail and crisp, uncluttered metaphor: The forerank of the enemy collapsed immediately as the first shock hit it; the body-length shields seemed to implode rearward, their anchoring spikes rooted slinging from the earth like tent pins in a gale. The forerank archers were literally bowled off their feet, their wall-like shields caving in upon them like fortress redoubts under the assault of the ram.... The valor of the individual Medes was beyond question, but their light hacking blades were harmless as toys; against the massed wall of Spartan armor, they might as well have been defending themselves with reeds or fennel stalks. Alas, even this human barrier was bound to collapse, as we knew all along it would. "War is work, not mystery," Xeo laments. But Pressfield's epic seems to make the opposite argument: courage on this scale is not merely inspiring but ultimately mysterious. --Marianne Painter

From Publishers Weekly
Pressfield's first novel, The Legend of Bagger Vance, was about golf, but here he puts aside his putter and picks up sword and shield as he cleverly and convincingly portrays the clash between Greek hoplites and Persian heavy infantry in the most heroic confrontation of the Hellenic Age: the battle of Thermopylae ("the Hot Gates") in 480 B.C. The terrifying spectacle of classical infantry battle becomes vividly clear in his epic treatment of the Greeks' magnificent last stand against the invading Persians. Driven to understand the courage and sacrifice of his Greek foes, the Persian king, Xerxes, compels Xeones, a captured Greek slave, to explain why the Greeks would give their lives to fight against overwhelming odds. Xeones' tale covers his years of training and adventure as the loyal and devoted servant of Dienekes, a noble Spartan soldier, and he describes the six-day ordeal during which a few hundred Greeks held off thousands of Persian spears and arrows, until a Greek traitor led the Persians to an alternate route. Rich with historical detail, hot action and crafty storytelling, Pressfield's riveting story reveals the social and political framework of Spartan life?ending with the hysteria and brutality of the spear-thrusting, shield-bashing clamor that defined a Spartan's relationship with his family, community, country and fellow warriors. From Library Journal
On a memorial stone placed at the ancient battlefield of Thermopylae are the words, "Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, that here, obedient to their laws, we lie." Those simple words end and encapsulate this brilliant and brutal epic tale. Beginning at the training fields of Sparta, Pressfield (The Legend of Bagger Vance, LJ 4/1/95) ushers the reader through the climactic Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C.E, fought by the combined armies of Sparta, Athens, and their allies against the invading soldiers of Persia. Narrated by the sole survivor of the battle at the "Hot Gates," in which 300 Spartans, hundreds of their allies, and tens of thousands of Persians died, this work portrays the men and women of ancient Sparta in intimate, dynamic detail. Pressfield weaves a fascinating tale of valor, fear, comradeship, and a courage that takes a handful of warriors beyond human frailty into immortality. An unforgettable novel.?Jane Baird, Anchorage Municipal Libs., AK

Tell the Spartans, Stranger Passing By
By Edwin C. Pauzer
Pressfield manages to bring one of the most historic and pivotal battles of civilization to life through characters of his invention. The battle is Thermopylae where 7000 Greeks led by 300 Spartans held an enormous Persian army of 200,000 at bay for several days, an army that would have changed our civilization had the Greeks not died fighting it. Never before or since has such a badly outnumbered army fought so valiantly nor effectively.

This story is told through the eyes of a Spartan slave who comes to admire his Spartan masters' fraternity, loyalty, and pride they have for themselves, their laws, and their city. It begins after the battle where the slave is wounded, and through a Persian interpreter, recounts his odyssey to Sparta, and his life that led to the moment the battle is over.

Pressfield brings us several ironies in this tale based upon historical fact. The Spartans who ruled the Peloponnesus ruthlessly seem to be the least likely saviors of a civilization from which we draw our roots. The Spartans were the only city-state that could have rallied the other Greeks to fight. And King Leonidas was the only Spartan who thought the best way to preserve his city was to preserve everything Greek. He sacrificed his life and lives of his men to rally a disunited country to attack, and defeat a ruthless invader which they did within the year.

It is also ironic that the Spartans who owned and killed slaves on a regular basis, saved their countrymen from becoming slaves themselves, and in a time of absolute crisis provided the leadership they were so reluctant to give, that saved Greece in the end.

In King Leonidas, Pressfield describes a king who feels it his duty to serve his people rather than being served. Leonidas is the pivotal Spartan, at a pivotal time and place in history that establishes his immortality making him as important as Charles Martel. He could not get his city to move his army, but he got all of Greece to move against the invader.

The fictitious characters in this story seem all too real. We admire them because they know they are making the supreme sacrifice for something greater than themselves. In spite of their society, it provided them with the means to make that sacrifice.

Some have criticized this book because the Spartans owned slaves. Slavery was the consequence of the loser from then until the Age of Progress. It is the valor, sacrifice, and skill that armies ever since have admired about Sparta, not the weakness of their Lycurgic tradition. Their culture, peace, and ruling others sealed their fate. Anyone who judges this story and Spartan society by 20th century standards misses the point, and the debt we owe a warrior class of people who protected the democratic traditions that survived them.

The story ends with the Persian defeat on the Plains of Plataea, and the death of the Spartan slave whose story was faithfully recorded. The Persian interpreter is spared the sword by calling the names of the dead and living Greeks he learned from the dying slave. With his life spared, he is able to establish the fate of the dead and the living he had come to admire and respect.

Every Spartan mother handed her son his shield and said, "[Come home] with it, or on it." The Spartans certainly did. It is everything Greek, it is ironic and it is tragic.

The Persians never attacked Greece again.

A superb retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae
By Mary Soon Lee
This is a superb retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae and of the protagonist's life leading up to the battle. I note that it took a little while for the book to fully hook me, but then I was captured by it. The scenes about the soldiers' training, the scenes of actual battle, and most particularly the scenes after or between battles, are all excellent. The discussions of fear, and of how officers and soldiers should behave are likewise excellent. The characters are surprisingly diverse (including among them servants who have varying degrees of loyalty to the Spartans, plus a Spartan boy who is not by nature a warrior though he is being trained to be one, a merchant, a supreme young warrior, and an older platoon leader). Unsurprisingly the book portrays the Spartan warriors as heroic and honorable--and does so extremely well. But it did surprise me that it also includes very strong portrayals of women as secondary characters, the strongest depictions of women I've met in fiction for a while. The women don't fight in the battles, yet are courageous and compassionate, intelligent and influential. I was also very taken by the portrayal of Leonidas, the Spartan king who commanded at Thermopylae. One of my favorite speeches in the book is addressed to Xerxes, the King of Persia, and contrasts Xerxes with Leonidas: "I will tell His Majesty what a king is. A king does not abide within his tent while his men bleed and die upon the field. A king does not dine while his men go hungry, nor sleep when they stand at watch upon the wall. A king does not command his men's loyalty through fear nor purchase it with gold; he earns their love by the sweat of his back and the pains he endures for their sake...." A wonderful book.

Terrific book on warrior mentality and why Soldiers fight
By Chris
One of the best books on why Soldier's fight, the warrior mentality, and the horrors of war. This book was mandatory reading for one of my classes, and it is still one of my favorite books many years later.
