A disturbing, gripping and suspenseful debut novel!

On New Year's Eve in 1999 ten-year old Amy Archer goes missing. Her parents, Beth and Brian, are shattered and the strain of not knowing what has happened to their daughter, coupled with the accusations of the press and public, leads to them splitting up.

Now dealing with the ever present grief by herself, Beth is alone on the evening of the ten year anniversary of Amy's disappearance when she is contacted by two strangers; a young woman called Libby and her ten-year old daughter Esme, who not only looks like Amy's double but even claims she's Beth's missing daughter.

While Beth is initially reluctant to accept their story, it doesn't take much for her to believe them when Esme is able to provide private details about Amy's life that never made it into the press.

Needless to say it is hard to digest for not only Beth but also the reader that Amy has really returned and what follows is a roller-coaster ride as the reader cannot help but mistrust everything that is written on the pages of the book until everyone and everything becomes suspect.

The novel is greatly disturbing in parts (a necessity considering the topic it deals with) as it paints a horribly realistic picture of the details surrounding the disappearance of a child and the trauma the event leaves on those implicated.

I was on the edge of my seat for the duration of this highly intriguing read and while the ending was not whole conclusive, leaving some things open to the imagination of the reader, it was certainly a satisfying one.

'The Second Life of Amy Archer' is a fantastic debut by author R.S. Pateman and right up there with recent acclaimed psychological thrillers Before I Go To Sleep by S.J. Watson and Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn; disturbing, gripping and suspenseful until the final page.

Better than I expected :

Have you ever picked up a book and started reading it and not knowing exactly what it's about per se or where it could head to ? That's what "The Second Life of Amy Archer" was like for me . The other thing is that I'm not normally keen on Brit Lit as it can be kind of blah and long-winded but The Second Life of Amy Archer was awesome. The novel starts off with Amy Archer disappearing one day from School when she should have come home and then jumps to Ten Years Later - the anniversary of her disappearance and yet her body still hasn't been found. Every year Amy visits a pyschic hoping to get in contact with her daughter but nothing seems to help until she meets Ian who will help her solve the case of her disappearing daughter. Meanwhile on the night of her ten year anniversary, Amy's mother Beth Archer gets a knock on the door. It is a young mum Lily and her daughter Esme. According to the mother Esme is her daughter Amy, but how can this be and especially if Esme is the same age Amy was when she went missing . Yet she is the spitting image and has all of Amy's memories ?
The Second Life of Amy Archer is a book you will not want to put down as you are drawn into the crazy world of Beth and what mothers will do to keep and save their children if possible. This is one Brit read, that I would highly recommend to all to read.

Just okay.

This book was totally unlike anything else I usually read and I really wasn't sure what to expect. Initially, I assumed that the story would revolve around a mother's bereavement and her search for the truth of what happened to her daughter ten years ago. It was a very slow burn and I am glad that I persevered as the second half of this book was amazing. It almost seemed as if someone else took over writing this halfway through. Suddenly there were twists and all sorts of secrets to be unearthed. It suddenly became the psychological thriller I had been expecting.

Beth's character was annoying from the start and I never really felt any sympathy towards her. I felt from the very start that it would be really careless to leave a ten-year old in a park on their own. She appears very self absorbed and whiney throughout the book. Likewise, Esme seems very mature for her ten years.

I could only give it three stars because of the lack of a proper ending. Seriously....you're going to end the story like THAT after I've invested five hours of my life? Very disappointing. The story's really lack lustre beginning was almost cause for me to give up on the entire book. I don't think any story requires such a slow build up to the main event.

Good information, horrible quality

The book and text are as expected. Short sections about each diagnosis with general information regarding HPI, PE, labs, imaging, ddx, and classic characteristics. Perfect size for my white coat pocket (medical student). I like the book just fine, but I ordered it new and it looks used. The cover was bent and the book isn't even bound to the cover. When you open the book the first page falls out. Extremely poor quality. Not worth the money, to be honest. I'll have to try to glue the pages to the book or just use a binder clip to piece it together. Disappointed in this purchase - would have just bought a used book had I known this.

I have the 1992 version of this book. The 1992 version has a MUCH better history taking section & differential diagnosis section.

The current edition is also missing common topics seen in ward medicine: ascites, alcoholic liver disease, peritonitis, and alcohol withdrawal to name a few.

Too bad, the 1992 version was a great book, I carried it for years as a med student & resident, & still have it.

This book breaks each chief complaint down into an H&P. It then tells you exactly the types of questions and physical exam findings you should look for given that chief complaint. Perfect for those (including myself!) who are still trying to figure out the relevant information for a given symptom/cc.

About the Author
Coordinating editor of this book, is a socio-economist at CIRAD. Since 2010, he is responsible for the program "Trajectories, differentiations and inequalities in rural societies" of the French research unit ART-Dev. He is currently working on family farming systems, to renew the analytical frameworks of their strategies and performance. As CIRAD’s focal point for the International Year of Family Farming, he recently published several books and articles on the topic and is invited to many international conferences on family farming all over the world.

Petty is a professor in the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he teaches atmospheric physics, atmospheric radiation and remote sensing to undergraduate and graduate students. A former shipboard and aviation weather observer in the U.S. Navy and a private pilot, he brings a uniquely practical perspective to the subject of this book. He is also the author of A First Course in Atmospheric Radiation.

This book is easy to understand and gives good explanations for the topic of thermo.
If this isn't your school's book, and your having trouble understanding the subject,I would definitely recommend this book.

Lots of interest (and lots of symbols)

I should make it clear that I am not a student of meteorology, and did not purchase this book in connexion with a college course. My motive to purchase was simply an interest in learning something about the forces driving the movement of air and water in the atmosphere. So my comments are aimed at those like myself with a non-course related interest.

Thanks to the simplicity (in component terms) of the system under study, atmospheric thermodynamics turns out to be a relatively uncomplicated subject, at least at the level presented in this book. Assuming one has had prior encounters with the basics of physical science and one's math is not too rusty, it's fairly straightforward to read.

The eight chapters in the book interweave the respective 'atmospheric' and 'thermodynamics' subjects in a sensible sequence that builds up into a complete picture of this very practical science.

Overall, I found the subject quite engrossing and learned a good deal from this reasonably-priced book. The only downside was the number of symbols used in the text, many of which will be unfamiliar to non-meteorologists. I found myself constantly having to refer to the appendix where the 'common' symbols are listed - all 102 of them!

A lucid and inexpensive introduction to atmospheric thermodynamics

A First Course in Atmospheric Thermodynamics is an attractive addition to the choice of textbooks available for undergraduate atmospheric thermodynamics classes. Readers may be familiar with Grant Petty's earlier book, "A First Course in Atmospheric Radiation," which was published by Petty's own Sundog Publishing and provided an inexpensive and relatively complete coverage of atmospheric radiation at the undergraduate level. This book does the same thing for atmospheric thermodynamics. It is aimed at students in meteorology or atmospheric sciences that are taking their first course in the subject, and while it covers the standard topics (composition of the atmosphere, properties of dry and moist air, lifting and adiabatic processes, stability, etc.), what sets it apart is the wealth of practical knowledge that other books are lacking. While all atmospheric thermodynamics texts talk about moisture variables, very few give instructions on how fast to whirl a sling psychrometer! For students in other fields taking this as perhaps their only upper division atmospheric science course, this may not be of
interest, but for students actually in the field there is an abundance of information that is hard to find elsewhere, including information on how various meteorological instruments work, skew-T log P diagrams, stability
indices and severe weather forecasting. While this may not be for everyone, it should keep its intended audience interested in what some books make a very dry field. One subject that may be missed is cloud microphysics, so you'll need to look elsewhere to find discussions of vapor pressure over a droplet, Raoult's Law, nucleation, etc.
Still, the practical knowledge, lucid explanations and relatively inexpensive price (especially when ordered directly from the publisher) make this a good choice for an introductory course in atmospheric thermodynamics.

A clear, insightful and practical guide!

This textbook is organized in 2 sections:
1. The Writing Process
2. Published Examples

In section 1, the author describes the process of “close readings” through examples that both illustrate and explain the logical structure of an argument. He stresses the importance of logic, illustrating fundamental differences between deductive and inductive logic and further explains common logical errors (animistic fallacy, intentional fallacy and reification.) Also included are useful pointers on conducting research and paper revisions.

Section 2 includes four published examples, each with an introductory paragraph that describes the intent and scope of the argument. The author judiciously incorporated examples that illustrate various approaches to writing about film titles. There is much to learn from comparing their methods.

This textbook was clearly written with the student in mind: it is highly accessible and points to the common pitfalls of student papers while recommending techniques on resolving them.

With its focus on Motion Graphics, it very much fills a void in the academic literature. A very useful guide that I will be using in my own classroom from here on.

About the Author
Thomas R. Weirich, Ph.D., CPA, is currently the Jerry & Felicia Campbell Endowed Professor at Central Michigan University and was also a former chair of its School of Accounting. He earned a Doctorate in Accountancy from the University of Missouri-Columbia, as well as an M.B.A. and B.S. degrees from Northern Illinois University. He has served on special assignment as the Academic Accounting Fellow to the Office of Chief Accountant at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C. He has completed a Faculty in Residence position with Arthur Andersen, LLP in their Business Fraud & Investigative Services Division whereby he participated in various fraud and background investigations. He also served as a consultant to the Public Oversight Board’s Panel on Audit Effectiveness, and as an expert witness for the SEC and other organizations. Dr. Weirich was recently appointed by the Governor of the State of Michigan to serve on the Michigan State Board of Accountancy. Dr. Weirich has public accounting experience with an international firm as well as with a local firm.
Professor Weirich has written numerous articles in professional journals and assisted others, such as by serving on the Editorial Advisory Board to the Journal of Accountancy. He has extensive national, state, and local committee experience including a member of the American Accounting Association’s Education Committee and the SEC Liaison Committee. He has completed assignments on the AICPA’s SEC Regulation’s Committee and on the AICPA’s Technical Standards Subcommittee-Ethics, the Board of Examiners’ Auditing Subcommittee and Content Committee that aid in the development of the CPA Examination. He also served on the AICPA’s Pre-Certification Executive Education Committee, the Michigan’s Association of CPAs’ CPE Committee, Fraud Task Force, and the Environmental Issues Committee. He is currently serving on the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy—CPA Licensing Examinations Committee. Dr. Weirich has also served eleven years on the Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, City Commission and as mayor of the city. Professor Weirich has been the recipient of the School of Accounting/Beta Alpha Psi’s Outstanding Teacher Award, Ameritech/SBC Teaching Award, the College of Business Dean’s Teaching Award, the Michigan Association of Governing Boards’ Distinguished Faculty Award and the Michigan Association of CPAs’ Distinguished Achievement in Accounting Education Award.

Thomas C. Pearson, LL.M., J.D., CPA�is a Professor of Accounting at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and former Director of its School of Accountancy. He has earned two Masters of Letters of Law in taxation, the first from the University of Denver and the second from New York University. He has a Doctorate of Jurisprudence and M.B.A. from Vanderbilt University, and an A.B. from Dartmouth College. Professor Pearson has previously taught at the University of Wyoming and National Taiwan University. Professor Pearson has previously worked at Hospital Corporation of America.

Professor Pearson has published numerous articles, mostly in professional publications such as Taxes and the Tax Advisor. He has also published in leading academic publications such as Accounting Horizons, Journal of Accounting Education, and Journal of the American Taxation Association. as well as in prestigious law reviews such as the Stanford Journal of Law, Business and Finance. Professor Pearson has received numerous teaching awards including the University of Hawaii’s Board of Regents Teaching Excellence Award and the Outstanding Achievement in Education Award by the Hawaii Society of CPAs. He has served as President of the Shidler College of Business Faculty Senate and on numerous university committees. He has also served on Hawaii’s Tax Review Commission and is involved in several professional organizations.

Natalie Tatiana Churyk, Ph.D., CPA, is the Caterpillar Professor of Accountancy at Northern Illinois University. She earned her Doctorate in Accounting with a Finance Cognate from the University of South Carolina. She received her B. S. in Accounting and her M.B.A. with a specialization in Finance from California State University, Long Beach. Dr. Churyk has public accounting experience with a local California firm. She teaches in the undergraduate and M.A.S. programs. In addition to teaching accountancy for NIU, Professor Churyk develops and delivers continuing professional education in Northern Illinois University’s CPA and CIA Review programs. Active with student groups, she is the faculty advisor for the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting, the National Association of Black Accountants, and the campus mentor for KPMG’s Future Diversity Leader Program. Professor Churyk has published in professional journals such as the Journal of Accountancy, Strategic Finance, and The CPA Journal. She has various academic publications in journals such as Journal of Business Research and Advances in Accounting Behavioral Research. Professor Churyk has received several teaching awards, including the University-wide Educational Foundation Outstanding Teaching Award for Graduate Assistants. She serves on several state and national committees relating to education, student, and women initiatives, including the American Accounting Association’s Teaching Learning and Curriculum Section and Midwest Steering Committee. She has received research grants from PricewaterhouseCoopers, the Institute of Management Accountants, and her university.

Overpriced

Way too expensive.

This book is $60 (plus shipping) new and $42.00 second hand.

The whole book is about 202 pages long and is paperback.

You can also tell that there is not that much to it, because the resale price is about 1/3 the original price and you only get $9 for a gift card.

Heads of Department, the only way I would recommend this book was if you could find enough copies that everyone could buy one used.
