The best I've read
By A Customer
George MacDonald's "Robert Falconer" is perhaps the best of his works that I have ever read. It deals extensively with a boy's search to know God personally while struggling with the concepts about God presented to him by his extremely strict Calvanist grandmother who raises him. It contains some of the best advice on Christian ministry that I have seen in a novel and I recommend this book highly. If you only want an entertaining book this may not be the best one since it is written in the phonetic Scottish accent, which can be difficult to understand. A few times I had to read it aloud in order to comprehend what he was saying. Still, the content is absolutely excellent, the story is entertaining (if you can get around the accent) and I am going to buy this book for my personal library when I can get some money together.

To know God is to obey God.
By A Customer
Robert Falconer should, in my opinion, be required reading for all who profess the faith of Christianity. The plot is simple and straightforward in that it does no more than recount the life and times of one man, Robert Falconer. Yet the lessons taught would be well-heeded by all who proclaim the Son of Man as Lord and Savior of their lives.
The story vividly portrays the misery, despair, confusion, hope, and all-consuming search of one small boy as he makes the arduous journey into manhood-a journey that too few seem either willing or able to make. Robert is forced to put away childish things, to submit to a stronger will and greater power than his own. He learns, not from his pious and orthodox grandmother, but from a bitter battle of endurance between God and self that the Father and Creator of all is also the greatest servant of all. He discovers that it is not through ritual and church service, not through hymns and rote prayers, but through service and obedience that one may know God truly. In order to serve God, one must serve his fellow creatures. There is no other way-"faith without works is dead."
This novel is founded upon a search-Robert's search for his Heavenly Father and his earthly father. While the plot line may not contain the action and intrigue desired of many, it is a perfectly realistic account of the battle that ensues when anyone would truly know God. It is the conflict between life and death. In my opinion, there is no greater battle to chronicle.
I invite you, nay beseech you, to walk alongside Robert Falconer as he begins a pilgrimage to Eternity. You will uncover much you may have forgotten of your own struggles, or you may find that your battle has not yet begun. If you can read this book with no pangs of conscience, no convictions of guilt, no mists of doubt, no desire to search your own heart, no compulsion to seek your Father then you are, indeed, to be commended or damned.

I love this book!
By WLJ
I was introduced to this story 25 years ago through the abridged version by Michael Phillips, for which I am thankful. But the original is infinitely superior. So glad it was available for the Kindle, though I actually read it on my iPhone.

An explosive, controversial account of the collapse of RBS and the collapse of the British economy - shortlisted for FINANCIAL TIMES AND GOLDMAN SACHSBUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEARAWARD2013. When RBS collapsed and had to be bailed out by the taxpayer in the financial crisis of October 2008 it played a leading role in tipping Britain into its deepest economic downturn in seven decades. The economy shrank, bank lending froze, and hundreds of thousands lost their jobs. Living standards are still falling and Britons will be paying higher taxes for decades to pay the clean-up bill. How on earth had a small Scottish bank grown so quickly to become a global financial giant that could do such immense damage when it collapsed? Based on over 80 interviews and with access to diaries and papers kept by those at the heart of the meltdown, this is the definitive account of the RBS disaster which still casts a shadow over our economy. In Making It Happen, senior executives, board members, Treasury insiders and regulators reveal how the bank's mania for expansion led it to take enormous risks its leaders didn't understand. From the birth of the Royal Bank in 18th century Scotland, to the manic expansion under Fred Goodwin in the middle of a mad boom and culminating in the epoch-defining collapse, Making It Happenis the full, extraordinary story.

A brilliant insight into Fred Goodwin, and the demise of

The Royal Bank of Scotland.

A must read for all Brits, and gives a great insight into the nonsense & the greed of the GFC era!

Once you start you can't put it down, highly recommended!

Fred was obviously a flawed genius, who through his actions, became public enemy number one inScotland.

Enjoy the journey, I did!

excellent read
By John Burbidge
A brilliantly researched profile of the unravelling of a disaster. It was objective and readers and others (politicians and regulators) should consider if there could be a repeat of this magnitude in other businesses. Aggressive growth eventually has to come at a cost. Look out Google, Facebook, Apple etc.

Making it happen
By Peter O - HKG
Good book highlighting the greed for power and money and fame. Goodwin comes across as the sociopath he really is. God save us from the likes of him and his cohorts. These people hadn't really got a clue but it took disaster and the loss of millions and billions for the poor suckers (like me) to find out.

There is nothing Aleron Pitre can't steal, nobody he can't con and no situation he can't slip out of—until he's sent to the prison planet Tantoret, where every sentence is death. If the prisoners don't kill each other, they'll die slowly from mining the poisonous drug chojal. Yet Aleron still hopes that he can escape.

Only thirty Athaki guards keep the chaos of Tantoret in check, a race of aliens stronger and faster than their human charges. Most intimidating of all is the head guard, Jasak, who has his own reasons for being sent to Tantoret.

Amidst the darkness and desperation, Aleron and Jasak share an unexpected attraction. An attraction neither can resist when Jasak claims Aleron as his mate to protect him. Then they discover that both guards and inmates are planning a coup, while a traitor from an enemy nation threatens the whole planet. Suddenly escape from Tantoret isn't just Aleron's dream—it's a matter of survival for them both.

A dark romance
By Emanuela PlasticDuck
Aleron is a thief from Old Earth and he's been sentenced to prison in Tantoret, a planet where the only richness is a mineral that can be made into a drug. The prisoners have to mine the drug, which has terrible effects on their bodies, and live underground in a dark and violent environment. Their guards are of the Athaki race and they are immune to the effects of the drug, that's why they were chosen for that role. The guards themselves are prisoners of the prison they have to guard, as they were sent there because they committed crimes.

No one is innocent. No one is above judgment. In this forsaken place Aleron meets the head of the guards, Jasak. Jasak follows his own rules and his own code of honor. Even if his own race thrives on blood, he does everything he can to keep his control and keep his guards in check so that the prison doesn't transform into a continuous blood bath. But Jasak is losing control on his fellow guards, who are starting to question his authority, and he is also losing control on the prisoners, who are beginning to plot against him as a way to get to rule the prison themselves.

The arrival of Aleron, with his unquenchable thirst for life, makes Jasak's position even more precarious, because Aleron put himself in danger to alert Jasak of a plot against him, even if he does so out of selfishness to save his own life, and the guard has to claim him as his mate so that no one can touch him. Aleron gets close to Jasak first of all because he wants to exploit the information he can gather from him in order to escape, but also because he is attracted to the guard. The two characters have to help each other to fend off treasons and attacks as their bond gets deeper.

Aleron changes during the book and I liked the way he did that, because he was almost taken by surprise. It takes a while for Aleron to abandon his plans of escaping to stay with Jasak. At first Aleron asks a lot of questions and he offers himself to Jasak, who is so honorable that he doesn't take a thing from the other man unless it's freely given, but in the attempt of stealing Jasak's secrets to use them to his own advantage, he loses the selfish part of his personality, until he bargains his self-interest with Jasak's needs.

Jasak, on the other hand, shows his noble soul many times and takes difficult and unpopular decisions to obey his own code of honor. Even if Aleron is a prisoner and he could abuse him because of his role and his greater physical strength, he treats Aleron as an equal and he shows an incredible tender side. Their love-making is slow and full of respect and sweetness, so while the world is dark and there's danger coming from every side, when they are together, they are able to keep everything else out of their bed and they abandon themselves to their senses as they lower all their emotional defenses.

The secondary character are well-developed and they are all given enough motivation and background to guarantee that each of them can stand out of their own. Even when they don't stay very long in the story, each one is important to the plot.

The setting is very interesting. The claustrophobic mine is depicted vividly and the dynamics in the circle of prisoners and the circle of guards is believable and it adds to the insecurity of the whole place. There are a few details which stuck in my mind and are brilliant, like for example the fact that the ground seems alive with creatures and seems to take nourishment from the blood spilled on it.

It's the first book I read by these authors and I must say that it exceeded my expectations. There's a very nice balance of both action and romance.

Featuring intensely appealing heroes, a fever-pitch plot, and delicious worldbuilding, Outcast Mine is a book by two authors (Vivian Dean and Pepper Espinoza collaborating as Jamie Craig) writing at the top of their M/M game in every way. It's as cunning as its double-entendre title would suggest and I read it in one sitting. And when I'd finished, I flipped back to the front and read it again immediately just to dissect its efficiency and elegance.

Lest I be accused of mindless gushing, I'd like to specify my praise in case what's working for me might not work for other readers. The skill and savvy on display here is so seamless that it deserves more than blank enthusiasm.

The novel's setup is classic high-concept adventure in the vein of Dumas and Burroughs: In a hellpit gulag used for mining an illegal hallucinogen, a slippery human thief named Aleron and a hardnosed alien warden named Jasak come together at the worst possible time in the best possible way. Every person present is a literal prisoner and byzantine subplots braid deftly through their stories, wringing pain and truth out of our flawed heroes on almost every page and fleshing out the rich environs. Aliens that feel like aliens! Intense violence that feels purposive and authentic! Impossible choices made against impossible odds! All this in a harrowing catacomb where the low heartbeat of the "Core" thumps around the inmates like a vast Hitchcockian clock.

For starters, Aleron's callow opportunism and Jasak's rigid detachment immediately lay the foundation for an explosive union. They are a beautifully mismatched duo, but Craig sidesteps any lame Odd-Couple chestnuts to focus on their unsteady balance between sacrifice, honor, and survival. Both are shaped with craft that never draws attention to itself: singular voices, blistering stakes, and bold, mindful use of POV to build suspense and empathy. Wily Aleron is a crook to the marrow of his bones, in diction, calculation, sociopathy... But his thievery goes beyond the literal to less tangible loot in ways that damn and save him. Jasak, leader of the Athaki guards, manages to be a bloodthirsty alpha-barbarian without resorting to empty swagger or Neanderthal clichs. Their slow-burn relationship is so compelling that at one point I realized I was fantasizing about being a convict in a toxic alien slavecamp. Without irony. Feel that fact.

Then the worldbuilding. Anne Lamott once said that the best writing starts with a "view the size of a postage stamp" and Craig eases the reader into the invented language, customs, and crises with laser focus. Each outlandish element appears as if under a pinpoint light that brightens and widens until the entire alien world blazes around us. Over and over, the expert use of POV did the work for me invisibly and contextually. In concrete terms that meant that I kept realizing I'd learned facts by osmosis about Athaki culture, Athess politics, and blackmarket chojal trade. From the opening moments of Aleron climbing through sludge in darkness, we absorb the environment alongside our protagonists, which deepens our empathy AND gradually widens our view of their world without fat slices of exposition cake. Clever-clever-clever!

The plotting is equally adroit. Every interaction escalates the stakes and the tension. Insults have their own story arcs and wounds have lasting consequences. A less-skillful author might have used Aleron's infirmary stint to plant a clichd escape attempt or to milk pathos out of the poisoned patients, but Craig folds that action into no less than four subplots involving fraternal devotion and treacherous factions seeking to overthrow the prison-mine! Every character, no matter how trivial, follows a meaningful arc that affects and is affected by everyone else until the entire colony boils with Claudian machinations driving it towards catastrophe. All that without getting wanky, derivative, or confusing. Take THAT, George Lucas!

Oh yeah. And the intimacy? Tender and filthy, thanks. Craig forces predatory heroes trapped in a lethal environment to walk a knife's-edge between lust and violence only to shock us with sweetness. Brilliant. The sex is subtle and surprising and motivated without exception. Trust is earned and tested. More proof of the skill at work: Jasak's Athaki bloodlust and Aleron's wounds motivate an intensely erotic licking scene which filters through all subsequent erotic (or bloody!) encounters... the heroes must negotiate bedding and body heat in their grim pit... Jasak's blood hunger overlaps thirst for other salty fluids... and the sex manages to stay alien AND erotic throughout which is no small feat, yo.

(n.b. I would pay a lot to see this novel adapted for film, even ultra-low-budget, because the story is so gritty and dynamic it could weather exploitation. Come back to the five-and-dime, Regent Entertainment, Regent Entertainment.)

Did I have quibbles? I suppose. Because it's action-adventure, the angst is more plot-based and there's too much incident for any tears to be jerked, which might irk some folks. I felt that the crime for which Jasak tortured himself seemed too noble and justified to warrant his inflexible masochism; a darker crime might have pushed his pathos further. While I reveled in the ghoulish comeuppance for Snod's scheming, I felt that for about 20 pages he got lost in the whiteknuckle shuffle and that the critical "Core Key" seemed a MacGuffin-y afterthought. Also, a few times I wanted another page on a fascinating minor character. But I can't exactly fault Craig for making the minutia so addictive that I wanted an extra scoop from a novel that is 400 pages long!

Outcast Mine is a joy to read. It is an astonishing gay romance and a rip-roaring old-school space opera unafraid to sidle over to Herbert and Chalker. This is the kind of impeccable genre fiction that makes crappy M/M writing look embarrassing by contrast, a book that hacks should fear and readers should cherish. Which is another way of saying this is genre writing that strengthens the genre. The craft here, the bone-deep skill and exuberance and wit of these two women writing as Jamie Craig, makes this novel a must-read for anyone with even a passing interest in romantic sci-fi.

There are obviously MANY more stories in these stars and I'll buy any Craig's planning. Funny thing: because everyone seems to be pumping out a series right now, I was almost about to say I can't wait to see the sequels to Outcast Mine, but that's kind of misleading. Much as I'd love to revisit this cosmos, even to check in on Aleron and Jasak, this book might be complete as it is. Dunno. What I really meant to say was that I can't wait to read the next book by Jamie Craig, regardless of the universe it occupies.

excellent!

What can I say about this title, except that it kept me glued to the page - or, ereader. I read an egalley courtesy of netgalley.com, and am now eager to read more from Carina Press. There were all the elements that I look for in a romantic fantasy read; engaging characters, solid world building, page-turning plot development, and as an added bonus to this type of erotic read - increasingly smoking sex scenes. This is not to say that I read this just for the sex, or even just for the plot, but rather both worked for me in a lovely symbiosis. I can't quite imagine enjoying one without the other.
Reading the authors' bio, it seems that they are frequent collaborators. I can only hope that Outcast Mine is not just a great read, but a representation of their work as a whole.
For those who need a bit more, this is the story of a thief, Aleron, sent to a prison planet where he is attracted to, and by, the commander of the prison, Jasak. Their immediate attraction is complicated not only by their status, but by the fact that Jasak is a powerful alien, and Aleron, while beautiful, dark-haired and blue-eyed, is a more vulnerable human.
Intriguing set-up, good execution, and in general, just a memorable read! Thanks.
