The standard for MSE books.

Taking a materials science/mechanical engineering course that uses this book and I love it.

Very clear writing/explanations, use of intuitive notation, problems gradually get tougher at a reasonable rate. Although my area is more in control systems, this MSE book has been really interesting. I'd take another course in it if I had time.

Book definitely assumes you have the prerequisites though -- some of the math can get tricky, but's all reasonable for an undergrad. Excellent colors/visually appealing. I think MSE is a very visual subject, and since I'm not a visual person, it really helps to see what's going on with clear diagrams/pictures.

My professor said this is a classic MSE book and I can see why. Two thumbs up.

Covers all the Material you need

This book covers everything you'll want to know for the foundation of material science and engineering. Great book that explains the concepts well and efficiently. I've gone to this book several times for covering topics I didn't cover in class, and the book did a great job of catching me up. I even used this for other classes like Fluid Mechanics or Heat Transfer. It's got it all. The example problems, while sometimes basic, provided you a great way to know if you understand the (wait for it....) material!

Love this book

I sold my newer edition and got an older edition (costs less money). This book has great detail and great at explaining things. I am a materials engineer and this is by far my most referenced book for a jumping off point. If you are unclear about something, I would start with this book and it will provide general details. After that, you can use resources that are more focused on a certain subject. I use it to refresh on basic ideas all of the time. This book provides such a strong foundation you would be crazy not to have it on your book shelf for reference if you do anything really materials oriented.

Engineer Ari and the Sukkah Express

In this sequel to the Sydney Taylor Honor Award winner Engineer Ari and the Rosh Hashanah Ride, Engineer Ari drives his train from Jerusalem to Jaffa, stopping along the way to collect fruit, branches, and a lulav and etrog for his sukkah from the friends he has made along his new route. After it is completed with the help of his engineer friends, Jessie (a woman engineer!) and Nathaniel, he feels sad that his new friends can't celebrate Sukkot with him in his courtyard. But Jessie and Nathaniel surprise him by taking his sukkah apart, reassembling it, and fastening it to his train, so that he can share it at his stops along his way. Children learn much about the Sukkot holiday and the significance of what is used to construct a sukkah. There is an author's historical note about the first train from Jerusalem to Jaffa in 1892. The reader learns that Ari's three new friends are named in Hebrew for the three different branches in the lulav: myrtle, willow, and palm, and that by counting the number of times the names appear in the story, the number of branches in the lulav will be revealed. The idea of the sukkah express, the appealing illustrations and the engaging characters will make this a hit with Jewish preschoolers. Ages 4 - 8. Andrea Davidson

Brilliant!

This series is a favorite with our little guy. He looks fwd to each book emerging from storage as the relevant holiday approaches.

The premise of these is just genius. No better way to communicate with a toddler about Jewish holidays than thru the medium of a red steam engine!

Nice Book for Jewish Kids

We loved Engineer Ari and the Rosh Hashanah Ride. This one isn't quite as good, but it's very cute and will be a favorite around Sukkot time. We look forward to more Engineer Ari books---it's a nice way to add to the Jewish education of a train-obsessed preschooler.

Excellent introductory book on Finite Difference Method

I first used this book a long time ago (1988) when the third edition of it just came out, while I just got a chance to write a review on it much much years after that. It was a required graduate textbook at an Ivy League college. It discussed in depth the finite difference technique applied to the parabolic, elliptic, and hyperbolic types of PDEs. The thing that I really like about this book is, besides having not too much details on mathematical derivations, it gives examples on how to do the calculations by hand. Thus when one would like to "translate" all these calculations into a computer program one could easily test the results (or expected results). Of course there are a lot more books out there talking about finite difference technique but they are perhaps 20 bucks or more expensive than this book. The only minus about this book is it was printed in soft cover, even though mine is still in a very good condition after almost 16 years! I recommend this book for those beginners on finite difference method. I am currently using this book for one of my course.

An excellent book, if you're interested in finite difference methods ...

An excellent book, if you're interested in finite difference methods for linear PDEs. I used an earlier edition as a textbook 30 years ago, and found it exceedingly useful. As the earlier reviewer states, the exposition is much closer to what you'd want if you were writing code, than what you'd want if you were proving theorems about stability and convergence. But the woods are full of books addressing the theoretical aspects. Books like this don't show up very often.

PREFACE

Considerable change has taken place in the administrative office management field. Technology—especially the desktop computer and the Internet—were unknown concepts when the first edition of this text was published in 1977. Today, technological advances have had a significant impact on the topics presented in the seventh edition of this text. Although no one can definitively determine the future direction of administrative office management, we can be sure of one thing: It will change. The office will experience more change in the next decade than it has from 1977 until now.

Managers and executives in companies of all sizes are focusing an ever-increasing concern on "the bottom line" because it is the most effective means of assuring their survival. The administrative office management field affects how well companies perform financially. As companies maximize the efficiency with which they carry out their office operations, they will perform better financially. All managers and executives can maximize the effectiveness of their areas of responsibility by improving administrative office management. STRUCTURE OF THE TEXT

As a field evolves, so must the materials used in the process of educating individuals about the field. Accordingly, several fundamental changes were made in the basic structure of the current edition. Perhaps the most drastic are the inclusion of a new chapter on applications software and the elimination of the chapters concerned with word processing and office automation. Some of the content of these two chapters has been incorporated into other chapters.

The configuration of the five basic text units includes chapters dealing with these topics:

Unit I: Principles of Administrative Office Management includes chapters dealing with these topics: the managerial process, the organizing process, and the communication process.

Unit II: Management of the Office Environment includes chapters dealing with office layout, office environment, and office equipment and furniture.

Unit III: Management of Office Employees contains chapters dealing with the following topics: selecting office employees, developing office employees, supervising office employees, motivating, performance appraisal, job analysis, job evaluation, salary administration, work measurement, and productivity.

Unit IV Management of Office Systems includes chapters pertaining to systems analysis, computer technology, telecommunications technology, applications software, and records management and micrographics.

Unit V Management of Office Functions includes chapters on forms design and control, office reprographics and mail services, quality and quantity control, and budgetary and cost control.

Among the topics new to this edition include globalization, employee empowerment, work teams, focus groups, telecommuting, hoteling, computer vision syndrome, electronic resume banks, Web-based employment services, job instruction training, mission and vision statements, technostress, computerized performance appraisal, 360-degree appraisal feedback, PPOs, knowledge management, palmtop computers, recordable CDs, DVDs, mirroring software, MANs, ISDN, ADSL, fax on demand, Internet fax, Internet, WWW, FTP, Usenet, Listserv, IRC, spreadsheet software, database software, scheduling software, digital stamps, and ISO 9000 certification.

Because most chapters are not dependent on either the preceding or following chapter, instructors have considerable flexibility in changing the order of coverage. Doing so will not impede learner understanding because chapter content is not interdependent. CHAPTER FEATURES

Several features are found in each chapter, including these opening features: chapter outline, chapter aim, and chapter terms. Marginal notations are found throughout each chapter. Features found at the end of each chapter include review questions, discussion questions, projects and activities, a minicase, and a case.

The chapter outline lists the primary and secondary headings found in the chapter. The chapter terms section gives the important terms found within the chapter. Each of these terms is shown in bold type at the point of first reference in the chapter. The chapter aim identifies the knowledge the student should possess after studying the chapter. The marginal notations ask a question about the material presented.

The review questions at the end of each chapter provide questions that can be used to determine how well the material has been mastered. The discussion questions are also designed to help the learner more quickly grasp the important concepts presented in the chapter and to become more knowledgeable about the topic of the chapter. The projects and activities are designed to provide an enrichment and/or growth opportunity, including one activity in each chapter that involves using the Internet. The minicase in each chapter presents a situation, followed by two or three items requiring learner response. The case presents details about a situation, along with a list of items to which the learner is to respond. Each minicase and case is designed to give the learner an opportunity to apply important chapter concepts. SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS

The supplementary materials that accompany this text include a CD-ROM-based instructor's manual and a Web site, accessible using the following URL: prenhall/business_studies.

The instructor's manual contains a variety of information, including suggested time schedules for a two-term course, a semester course, or a term course, as well as sample course objectives and suggested teaching procedures. The book would have been good about 10 years ago, but I've already found several major errors. For example, one certification that the book recommends, harps on, and tests on doesn't even exist anymore. Also, even though this edition was copyrighted in 2005, most of the online supplements put out by the publisher and emphasized in the book are not available anymore. In a nutshell, this book is woefully out of date.

Heartfelt storytelling in an other-worldly environment that is not alien...

Melanie Pahlmann is a remarkable story teller who engages her readers from the first sentence. She tells a universal story of love, loss, joy and sadness, tragedy and triumph -- the spectrum of human experience. Crafted from a complex milieu of technology, science and interpersonal relationships, Lin's story mirrors the all-too-human tale set on another planet in another star system.

Clouds, plants, creatures -- even solar energy and environmental harmony -- are all exquisitely developed to ignite the imagination while reminding us of our own stories. To categorize "How to be Happy on a Cloudy Planet" only as a children's book would rob both child and the adult within all of us of the richness of experience that flows from Lin's first-person telling of her life.

The opportunity to be transported by Lin's story -- out of the mouth of babes -- is to embrace our own story and explore the possibilities not only for us as individuals, but as a species interacting with a living planet. "How to be Happy on a Cloudy Planet" will inspire us all to be happy wherever we are.

What is possible for us here on Earth

How to be Happy on a Cloudy Planet is a science fiction coming of age novel about a little girl living on the planet Luratia 360 light years from Earth. Although Luratia is an advanced free-energy planet, where power is collected in outer space above the clouds and then distributed to everyone for free, Lin, the 10 yr old heroine and a lover of technology, must overcome the many challenges of living in the backward fishing village where she was born.

Even though the Luratians are not human, I found them very relatable. Lin loses her mom early in the book and has a traumatized and dictatorial dad to contend with as she tries to bring progress to a town that is resistant to change. The characters are beautifully articulated and the contrast of the sleepy fishing village with the rest of the planet that is far more advanced is sharply drawn. I think everyone will find a part of Lin in themselves as I did. A valuable book about the pros and cons of progress for all ages, How to Be Happy on a Cloudy Planet, takes us deep into what is possible for us here on Earth and the challenges we face getting there.

Life is Similar on Other Planets!

I would recommend this product to all ages, though more specifically it would be a wonderful family sort of read...parent to children ages 10-18.

The first of the Luratia Chronicles was sweet, inspiring, and as it evolved, very realistic in terms of a family's responses to life events and circumstances. The main character, Lin, is a courageous, smart, committed and adventurous 10-year-old girl.

Initially a reluctant leader not only among her peers, but within the adult sector of her town as well, she continues to find center and express her truth amidst a backwards way of life. Learning from and maturing through one of her teachers, she begins to entrain everyone around her, particularly her own family.

Can't wait for the sequel to meet Lin as she grows up a bit!
