Written by a pioneer of game development in academia, Introduction to Game Physics with Box2D covers the theory and practice of 2D game physics in a relaxed and entertaining yet instructional style. It offers a cohesive treatment of the topics and code involved in programming the physics for 2D video games.
Focusing on writing elementary game physics code, the first half of the book helps you grasp the challenges of programming game physics from scratch, without libraries or outside help. It examines the mathematical foundation of game physics and illustrates how it is applied in practice through coding examples. The second half of the book shows you how to use Box2D, a popular open source 2D game physics engine. A companion website provides supplementary material, including source code and videos.
This book helps you become a capable 2D game physics programmer through its presentation of both the theory and applications of 2D game physics. After reading the book and experimenting with the code samples, you will understand the basics of 2D game physics and know how to use Box2D to make a 2D physics-based game.

The math you need, not a cookbook you don't need
By Jonathon Doran
This is not a book on Box2D that happens to discuss physics, this is a book on game physics that happens to use Box2D for illustration. And since physics is just applied mathematics, this is in a sense a book on mathematics first. But rather than just looking at equations you have demonstration programs which help you visualize the mathematics. In other words, the focus is on the math. A demo without the math is probably not going to help you write your game. The math without the demo is better, since you might figure it out. The two together is what you get with this book.
If you just want to play around with game physics and not worry about the math, it might be frustrating to see a book like this. But in that case you will be disappointed with any book. Game physics is a topic where you really need to understand why things work before you can get good results. If you struggle to get your physics objects to behave correctly in your game, then you'll find this book very useful. Here is an explanation of the mathematics you need with mini-games to demonstrate.
I think another strength of the book is that there is mathematical rigor here. You will appreciate that later. But a unique aspect of this book is that the math is all 2D rather than 3D. That makes it much easier to grasp, and once you have that down, the extension to a 3rd dimension isn't all that bad. Remember how calculus is usually taught with 2D curves, and then you extend the concepts to 3D?

Good book
By Maikel
A great book that neatly fills the gap between the fundamental physics theory and implementation from scratch needed in order
to efficiently use a commercial 2d physics engine, in this case box2d, in your own or other game engine.
Be warned though, the author does assume you have a working knowledge of linear algebra and calculus or past experience with those.
If you are in doubt about that, it might be best to brush up those skills a bit first. The author does a quick overview/introduction
on key concepts but its to little to help a complete novice.
I already had some experience with box2d before reading this book but never had to implement similar physics from scratch, by doing this the book really
helped me to understand some of the underlying thoughts of box2d better.
Recommended.

bug in page 31
By Simon Chow
page 31 states: v = u - 2(u.n)n
should be: v = u + 2(u.n)n
same on page 32's diagram
