Ignore the other guy, it's worth it.

Ignore the other review, this book is written by Rick Riordan, and is a very entertaining read. It helps offer insight into the asgardian universe and adds more story to the characters. Definitely worth the money, especially while waiting for the hammer of Thor.

Alyssa Dweck MD is a gynecologist in Westchester County, NY. She is proficient in gynecologic surgery and has expertise in female sexual health. She has been voted Top Doctor in New York Magazine and Westchester Magazine. She provides care to women of all ages and has delivered thousands of babies. A graduate of Barnard College, she has a Masters Degree in Human Nutrition from Columbia University and her MD from Drexel University in Philadelphia. She did her residency training at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, Pa. She is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and a Consultant Massachusetts General Hospital (Vincent's Memorial Ob/Gyn Service). For Advertisers and Copywriters

The elements of true Copywriting from the man who brought the names of products into your household that you use everyday. WIthout qualifications, degrees, Hopkins was astute enough to use an analysis or method to measure the reaction of the user of the product. He put people first because he was just an ordinary person.

The use of the term "scientific advertising" is to make the advertiser feel more comfortable pushing papers around to make money. The advertiser represents the seller and the Copywriter represents the consumer.

Hopkins, the Copywriter, the one who writes the copy for the advertiser, represents the user the person who puts the bread and butter on the table of the advertiser. Contrary to Corporate opinion you don't need a college degree to be a Copywriter. The two greatest faults in advertising are boasts and selfishness.

If you are a seller advertising your products and services this is the book written for you.
If you are a Copywriter writing the copy you'll recognize yourself in the text. Like Hopkins, you understand confidence in the product and confidence in the people.

Larger than Life - yet human

Many detailed reviews on the virtues of this twin book have been already posted here. I doubt I can add to them in any meaningful way. I will just add my perspective.

I am new to the world of advertising, having taken up direct response copywriting as my new career. I am awestruck at the level of sophistication practiced by Hopkins and the array of new techniques he had invented that are still being used today.

I only had a chance to complete the first book, My Life in Advertising, the biographical version. I am working on the second part, Scientific Advertising.

While we all respect Hopkins for for his contribution to the industry, it was touching to read his reflection on his own career, wondering about the peaceful life he could have had as opposed to his chosen path of workaholism that enabled him to rise to such heights. The human element is always there.

Fantastic Advertising Book: The Real Deal Without The Smoke and Mirrors..

The best direct response marketers cannot give this book enough praise and I can see why.. This is the basics of which every great campaign is built. If you don't have this knowledge then you are on shaky grounds. It is based on common sense, which is what most ad agencies try to remove from the evaluation process regarding campaigns.

In the end of the day, any ad should pull enough profits to justify the cost of running it. And if you are not measuring it, or just "branding", how would you ever know if you are getting your money back vs flushing money down the toilet?

If you are a business owner, read this book before ad agencies and other sneaky media sales reps takes your last dollar.. And don't believe in the branding BS, unless you are Coca Cola and have distribution in virtually every location thinkable.

David Ogilwy, which is probably the most famous ad-man in the world, said that every serious advertiser should have read this book at least 7 times. So do yourself a favor and read it at least 3 times. You will thank yourself later (and hopefully read it another 4 times)..

It is interesting to see how a book this old, can still be as relevant today almost a 100 years later..

About the Author
The legendary and iconic figure, Spike Milligan was born at Ahmednagar in India in 1918. He received his first education in a tent in the Hyderabad Sindh desert and graduated from there, through a series of Roman Catholic schools in India and England, to the Lewisham Polytechnic. He then plunged into the world of Show Business, seduced by his first stage appearance, at the age of eight, in the nativity play of his Poona convent school. He began his career as a band musician, but became famous as a humorous scriptwriter and actor in both films and broadcasting. He was the creator, principal writer and performer of the infamous Goon Show. Spike received an honorary CBE in 1992 and Knighthood in 2000. He died in 2002.

Good book, noticeable different from the first six in the series. Spike was getting old when he wrote this.
Still a classic, drenched with nostalgic feelings.
Ended a bit too soon for me, would have liked it too continue to the start of the Goon show.

Get a REAL atlas

If you have the Tortora book, then you do not need this atlas. I would highly, highly recommend that you do not waste money on this atlas. Spend a few more dollars and get a copy of the Netter's atlas for students. Trying to use this atlas in my human anatomy lab/class (intro) has been nothing but annoying. Many important landmarks are overlooked and I have repeatedly had to refer to Netter's to figure out where landmarks are. Avoid this atlas and save your money and frustration.

Know your study situation

This photographic atlas is OK for those who don't have an intensive anatomy course, such as those that utilize actual human cadavers. It would be an insult to those who donated their bodies for such an endeavor to possess this book. In that case, it would do you best to get an actual atlas that was dedicated to human-only study. If, however, you are interested in veterinary studies, then this might suit you well. I used this book for a non-human-cadaver anatomy course and it served me well. When I moved into cadaver study, my textbooks reflected such a transition.

The takeaway: buy this book if you are not in a cadaver lab or if you are in veterinary studies. DO NOT buy this book if you are in a human cadaver lab.

A Must for any Pre-med and Med student

I'm a pre-med student, and when I first heard about this book from my professor, I was a bit skeptical that it would help me or anyone that wasn't already in med school. But when I got it, it was clear and easy to follow. The pictures weren't some badly drawn figurines, or a mess of grey, unidentifiable body parts, they were real photographs of the skeleton which were, thank goodness!, easy on the eyes. I might not be in med school yet, but I'm making sure I have this book with me. As a revision and reference book, this one is the greatest!

About the Author
Philip J. Adler taught college courses in world history to undergraduates for almost thirty years prior to his recent retirement. Dr. Adler earned his Ph.D. at the University of Vienna following military service overseas in the 1950s. His dissertation was on the activity of the South Slav emigres during World War I, and his academic specialty was the modern history of Eastern Europe and the Austro-Hungarian empire. His research has been supported by Fulbright and the National Endowment for the Humanities grants. Adler has published widely in the historical journals of the U.S. and German-speaking Europe. He is currently professor emeritus at East Carolina University, where he spent most of his teaching career.

Excellent history textbook

This book is not one of those big fat history book which is impossible to read from cover to cover. It just covers enough materials to be an excellent informative introductory textbook. It would also be a great book for those who are interested in learning world history.

It is simple, concise, and informative. I bought volume 2 for lesiure reading after using volume 1 as a textbook for my history class.

About the Author
SCOTT A. HUETTEL is Associate Professor in the Brain Imaging and Analysis Center and Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at Duke University. He is also faculty in the Departments of Psychiatry, Neurobiology, and Psychology. He received a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Duke University. His research uses behavioral and functional neuroimaging techniques to investigate the executive control of behavior, with particular focus on decision-making, reward evaluation, and neuroeconomics. ALLEN W. SONG is Director of the Brain Imaging and Analysis Center and Professor in the Departments of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering at Duke University. His Ph.D., in Biophysics, was earned from the Medical College of Wisconsin. His research involves the development and optimization of new methods to improve the functional sensitivity and specificity of fMRI. A central focus is the development of alternative contrast mechanisms for fMRI, including diffusion and perfusion imaging and direct imaging of neuronal activity. GREGORY MCCARTHY is Professor of Psychology at Yale University. He is also a Research Career Scientist for the Department of Veterans Affairs. He received his Ph.D. in Biological Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. McCarthy is broadly interested in the functional anatomy of the human brain, an interest he has pursued using behavioral, electrophysiological, and neuroimaging methods. One goal of his research is to elucidate the brain mechanisms of high-level visual function, particularly with regard to perception of faces and visual motion cues for social cognition. Another line of research investigates executive functions, particularly in the frontal lobe, and how they are altered by distracting or emotional stimuli.

About the Author
Lev Grossman was born in Massachusetts in 1969 and studied literature at Harvard and Yale. He is currently a writer and book critic for Time Magazine. He has written feature articles for Salon, Lingua Franca, Entertainment Weekly, Time Out New York and The Village Voice, and was previously the producer of timedigital.com, Time magazine's personal technology website. This is his second novel. He lives in Brooklyn.
