About the Author

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of noted author W. Richard Stevens. His passing is obviously a tremendous loss for the technical community, but it is a personal one for us as well. Rich was both a gifted colleague and a valued friend who will be greatly missed. We extend our sympathies to his family.

Obituary from the Arizona Daily Star:

STEVENS, W. Richard, noted author of computer books died on September 1. He is best known for his "UNIX Network Programming" series (1990, 1998, 1999), "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" (1992), and "TCP/IP Illustrated" series (1994, 1995, 1996). Richard was born in 1951 in Luanshya, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), where his father worked for the copper industry. The family moved to Salt Lake City, Hurley, New Mexico, Washington, DC and Phalaborwa, South Africa. Richard attended Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, Virginia. He received a B.SC. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1973, and an M.S. (1978) and Ph.D. (1982) in Systems Engineering from the University of Arizona. He moved to Tucson in 1975 and from then until 1982 he was employed at Kitt Peak National Observatory as a computer programmer. From 1982 until 1990 he was Vice President of Computing Services at Health Systems International in New Haven, CT, moving back to Tucson in 1990. Here he pursued his career as an author and consultant. He was also an avid pilot and a part-time flight instructor during the 1970's.

He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Sally Hodges Stevens; three wonderful children, Bill, Ellen and David; sister, Claire Stevens of Las Vegas, NV; brother, Bob and wife Linda Stevens of Dallas, TX; nieces, Laura, Sarah, Collette, Christy; and nephew, Brad. He is predeceased by his parents, Royale J. Stevens (1915-1984); and Helen Patterson Stevens (1916-1997). Helen lived in Tucson from 1991-1997, and Royale lived here in the early 1930's attending Tucson High School while his father was treated for TB at the Desert Sanitorium (now TMC). The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Richard's name to Habitat for Humanity, 2950 E. 22nd Street, Tucson, AZ 85713. A memorial service for Richard will be held at St. Phillip's in the Hills Episcopal Church on Tuesday, September 7th at 12:00 noon. Following the service there will be a reception in the Murphy Gallery of the Church. Please wear colorful clothing to the service; Richard loved colors.

W. Richard Stevens was an acknowledged UNIX and networking expert and the highly-respected author of several books. He was also a sought-after instructor and consultant.

Introduction and Organization of the BookThis book is a logical continuation of the TCP/IP Illustrated series: Stevens 1994, which we refer to as Volume 1, and Wright and Stevens 1995, which we refer to as Volume 2.

This book is divided into three parts, each covering a different topic:

TCP for transactions, commonly called T/TCP. This is an extension to TCP designed to make client-server transactions faster, more efficient, and reliable. This is done by omitting TCP's three-way handshake at the beginning of a connection and shortening the TIME_WAIT state at the end of a connection. We'll see that T/TCP can match UDP's performance for a client-server transaction and that T/TCP provides reliability and adaptability, both major improvements over UDP.

A transaction is defined to be a client request to a server, followed by the server's reply. (The term transaction does not mean a database transaction, with locking, two-phase commit, and backout.)

TCP/IP applications, specifically HTTP (the Hypertext Transfer Protocol, the foundation of the World Wide Web) and NNTP (the Network News Transfer Protocol, the basis for the Usenet news system).

The Unix domain protocols. These protocols are provided by all Unix TCP/IP implementations and on many non-Unix implementations. They provide a form of interprocess communication (IPC) and use the same sockets interface used with TCP/IP. When the client and server are on the same host, the Unix domain protocols are often twice as fast as TCP/IP.

Part 1, the presentation of T/TCP, is in two pieces. Chapters 1-4 describe the protocol and provide numerous examples of how it works. This material is a major expansion of the brief presentation of T/TCP in Section 24.7 of Volume 1. The second piece, Chapters 5-12, describes the actual implementation of T/TCP within the 4.4BSD-Lite networking code (i.e., the code presented in Volume 2). Since the first T/TCP implementation was not released until September 1994, about one year after Volume 1 was published and right as Volume 2 was being completed, the detailed presentation of T/TCP, with examples and all the implementation details, had to wait for another volume in the series.

Part 2, the HTTP and NNTP applications, are a continuation of the TCP/IP applications presented in Chapters 25-30 of Volume 1. In the two years since Volume 1 was published, the popularity of HTTP has grown enormously, as the Internet has exploded, and the use of NNTP has been growing about 75% per year for more than 10 years. HTTP is also a wonderful candidate for T/TCP, given its typical use of TCP: short connections with small amounts of data transferred, where the total time is often dominated by the connection setup and teardown. The heavy use of HTTP (and therefore TCP) on a busy Web server by thousands of different and varied clients also provides a unique opportunity to examine the actual packets at the server (Chapter 14) and look at many features of TCP/IP that were presented in Volumes 1 and 2.

The Unix domain protocols in Part 3 were originally considered for Volume 2 but omitted when its size reached 1200 pages. While it may seem odd to cover protocols other than TCP/IP in a series titled TCP/IP Illustrated, the Unix domain protocols were implemented almost 15 years ago in 4.2BSD alongside the first implementation of BSD TCP/IP. They are used heavily today in any Berkeley-derived kernel, but their use is typically "under the covers," and most users are unaware of their presence. Besides being the foundation for Unix pipes on a Berkeley-derived kernel, another heavy user is the X Window System, when the client and server are on the same host (i.e., on typical workstations). Unix domain sockets are also used to pass descriptors between processes, a powerful technique for interprocess communication. Since the sockets API (application program interface) used with the Unix domain protocols is nearly identical to the sockets API used with TCP/IP, the Unix domain protocols provide an easy way to enhance the performance of local applications with minimal code changes.

Each of the three parts can be read by itself.

ReadersAs with the previous two volumes in the series, this volume is intended for anyone wishing to understand how the TCP/IP protocols operate: programmers writing network applications, system administrators responsible for maintaining computer systems and networks utilizing TCP/IP, and users who deal with TCP/IP applications on a daily basis.

Parts 1 and 2 assume a basic understanding of how the TCP/IP protocols work. Readers unfamiliar with TCP/IP should consult the first volume in this series, Stevens 1994, for a thorough description of the TCP/IP protocol suite. The first half of Part 1 (Chapters 1-4, the concepts behind T/TCP along with examples) can be read independent of Volume 2, but the remainder of Part 1 (Chapters 5-12, the implementation of T/TCP) assumes familiarity with the 4.4BSD-Lite networking code, as provided with Volume 2.Many forward and backward references are provided throughout the text, to both topics within this text, and to relevant sections of Volumes 1 and 2 for readers interested in more details. A thorough index is provided, and a list of all the acronyms used throughout the text, along with the compound term for the acronym, appears on the inside front covers. The inside back covers contain an alphabetical cross-reference of all the structures, functions, and macros described in the book and the starting page number of the description. This cross-reference also refers to definitions in Volume 2, when that object is referenced from the code in this volume.

AcknowledgmentsFirst and foremost I thank my family, Sally, Bill, Ellen, and David, who have endured another book along with all my traveling during the past year. This time, however, it really is a "small" book.

I thank the technical reviewers who read the manuscript and provided important feedback on a tight timetable: Sami Boulos, Alan Cox, Tony DeSimone, Pete Haverlock, Chris Heigham, Mukesh Kacker, Brian Kernighan, Art Mellor, Jeff Mogul, Marianne Mueller, Andras Olah, Craig Partridge, Vern Paxson, Keith Sklower, Ian Lance Taylor, and Gary Wright. A special thanks to the consulting editor, Brian Kernighan, for his rapid, thorough, and helpful reviews throughout the course of the book, and for his continued encouragement and support.

Special thanks are also due Vern Paxson and Andras Olah for their incredibly detailed reviews of the entire manuscript, finding many errors and providing valuable technical suggestions. My thanks also to Vern Paxson for making available his software for analyzing Tcpdump traces, and to Andras Olah for his help with T/TCP over the past year. My thanks also to Bob Braden, the designer of T/TCP, who provided the reference source code implementation on which Part 1 of this book is based.

Others helped in significant ways. Gary Wright and Jim Hogue provided the system on which the data for Chapter 14 was collected. Doug Schmidt provided a copy of the public domain TTCP program that uses Unix domain sockets, for the timing measurements in Chapter 16. Craig Partridge provided a copy of the RDP source code to examine. Mike Karels answered lots of questions.

My thanks once again to the National Optical Astronomy Observatories (NOAO), Sidney Wolff, Richard Wolff, and Steve Grandi, for providing access to their networks and hosts.

Finally, my thanks to all the staff at Addison-Wesley, who have helped over the past years, especially my editor John Wait.

As usual, camera-ready copy of the book was produced by the author, a Troff die-hard, using the Groff package written by James Clark. I welcome electronic mail from any readers with comments, suggestions, or bug fixes.

Good but not as good as the other two
By Joshua Davies
After having read volumes I & II, I felt compelled to read volume III in spite of other customer reviews here. Having just finished this one, I'm inclined to agree with the other reviewers - interesting, but not as earth-shattering as the first two. The first half of the book covers, in volume-II style detail, an implementation of T/TCP for BSD; although this is interesting, it's not very practical, since T/TCP never caught on in the real world. The next part of the book covers HTTP & NNTP, but doesn't go into much detail; if you know what HTTP & NTTP are, you probably already know all the material covered in this book. Finally, the book ends by examining the BSD implementation of the Unix domain sockets. This last bit was the most relevant part of the book, but don't even think about trying to read this if you haven't completed volume II (and have it handy - the text refers back to specific pages and diagrams from Volume II). If you've read the other two books (Volume II in particular), you'll want to read this one to round out the experience, but don't expect to be blown away like you were with the others.

A good book, covering rarely explained protocols.
By Uri Raz
This book covers a need distinct from the first two volumes - the first two covered the core protocols' internals, while this one covers the application level protocols - a subject hardly covered by any other book.
I've found this book very useful for understanding T/TCP, a subject my teacher did not explain well and was obscure for me.
The NNTP & HTTP cover was useful, especially as I was doing a lab on HTTP, but I must admit that as far as HTTP goes the RFCs were sufficient.

Writing software for the web?
By Wayne Witzel III
If you are planning on writing any software for the web, this is one of the books you need. This book covers T/TCP, HTTP, NNTP, and more including UD Protocols and some good info in the appendix.
W. Richard Stevens has never let me down with any of his books, and this one is no diffrent. Its too bad hes not around to write books any more, alot of people will be missing out on great books from a great author.
This is a must have!!

The New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice

Financial Times, New Statesman and The Guardian Best Books of 2016

The flneur is the quintessentially masculine figure of privilege and leisure who strides the capitals of the world with abandon. But it is the flneuse who captures the imagination of the cultural critic Lauren Elkin. In her wonderfully gender-bending new book, the flneuse is a “determined, resourceful individual keenly attuned to the creative potential of the city and the liberating possibilities of a good walk.” Virginia Woolf called it “street haunting”; Holly Golightly epitomized it in Breakfast at Tiffany’s; and Patti Smith did it in her own inimitable style in 1970s New York.

Part cultural meander, part memoir, Flneuse takes us on a distinctly cosmopolitan jaunt that begins in New York, where Elkin grew up, and transports us to Paris via Venice, Tokyo, and London, all cities in which she’s lived. We are shown the paths beaten by such flneuses as the cross-dressing nineteenth-century novelist George Sand, the Parisian artist Sophie Calle, the wartime correspondent Martha Gellhorn, and the writer Jean Rhys. With tenacity and insight, Elkin creates a mosaic of what urban settings have meant to women, charting through literature, art, history, and film the sometimes exhilarating, sometimes fraught relationship that women have with the metropolis.

Called “deliciously spiky and seditious” by The Guardian, Flneuse will inspire you to light out for the great cities yourself.

Review

"Absorbing . . . Elkin has an eye for the unexpected detail, as befits a flneuse. . . It will be up to booksellers to figure out how to categorize her pastiche of travel writing, memoir, history and literary nonfiction. A reader, flaneusing along the bookshelves, will find in it some of the pleasures of each." ―Diane Johnson, The New York Times Book Review

“At a moment when women’s rights have come to significant national attention, Flneuse also reads as a document of resilience, one that celebrates female figures fighting to be seen . . . Blending historical analysis, literary criticism, and memoir, Elkin seeks to re-define the concept of flnerie itself, and to reclaim the city for its women wanderers.” ―Arnav Adhikari, The Atlantic

"By focusing on six writers and artists . . . [Elkin's] book makes a forceful case for the genderless joy and vital importance of striking out for the territory―on foot . . . Flneuse is a stimulating read whose itinerary ranges from wanderlust and space as a 'feminist issue' to self-definition in connection with a specific place." ―Heller McAlpin, Los Angeles Times

"Lauren Elkin brings breadth and depth to a cocktail party crowded with genius . . . Her historical and literary portraits take their power from her talent for seeing aslant, making the familiar strange and vice versa . . . Ms. Elkin’s clear-eyed view of her own flneuserie is one of the charms of a book that is pedestrian in the best possible sense: It makes you want to walk.” ―Jane Kamensky, Wall Street Journal

"[An] eclectic and absorbing memoir and cultural history . . . The book strikes a rewarding balance between present and past, as it establishes and illustrates the much-needed definition of the flaneuse as "a determined, resourceful individual keenly attuned to the creative potential of the city, and the liberating possibilities of a good walk." ―Kathleen Rooney, Chicago Tribune

“An ambitious, powerful meditation on women in the urban space . . . Cities, in Elkin's rich, intelligent prose, become not static places that lend themselves to unidirectional efforts of observation, but whole dynamic languages―interconnected networks of constantly changing symbols . . . Elkin's book is more than just a secret history of all the women who have illicitly occupied space. It's also a revelation of just how rich, and full of meaning, that space can be―if you know how to be in it." ―Tara Isabella Burton, Village Voice

“An impressive and wide-ranging study . . . Walking after reading Elkin’s book felt more greatly imbued with both intellectual purpose and gratitude, my own attentiveness to my surroundings heightened. I walked with a better understanding of my place within an intellectual sisterhood of wandering women, flanked by a ghostly girl squad of writers, artists, and creators.” ―Matilda Rossetti, The Rumpus

"Sparkling and original . . . [Elkin's] literary peregrinations defy boundaries, fusing cultural history, criticism, psycho-geography and memoir. Both playful and bracingly intelligent, Elkin’s elegant prose unfurls a portrait of the writer as an urban woman. . . With perhaps an eerie prescience, Flneuse examines the interrelationships of city, self and world." ―Marian Ryan, Minneapolis Star Tribune

"Flneuse is a deeply pleasurable book, whether you are a man or a woman, whether you know these cities (or books, or writers, or artists) or not. You will see these streets anew, just as if you were a flneur in a New York neighborhood or along a canal in Venice. There is always something more to explore, just around the next corner―or on the next page." ―A.V. Club

“In her richly evocative and absorbing debut, cultural critic Elkin homes in on the female version of the flaneur . . . In this insightful mix of cultural history and memoir, Elkin emerges at the protagonist as she mines her personal journey from the suburbs of Long Island to her current home in Paris.” ―Publishers Weekly

"Surely women also strolled and observed, Elkin thought, coining the term flneuse and embarking on a gloriously rambling quest to celebrate women worthy of this designation . . . Elkin shares her findings in a smart and shimmering mix of her own painful and exhilarating adventures . . . [She] concludes her splendidly discursive homage to intrepid women walkers with the sobering reminder that, in many places, “a woman still can’t walk in the city the way a man can.” ―Booklist

"I've been waiting for years to see the history of women walkers in the city added to the critical literature of the flaneur―and here, in Lauren Elkin's really smart and lovely book, it is." ―Vivian Gornick

“An appealing blend of memoir, scholarship, and cultural criticism . . . Elkin's own story runs through the text like a luminous thread. She tells us the woman-in-the-street stories of Jean Rhys, Virginia Woolf, George Sand, Sophie Calle, Agns Varda, and Martha Gellhorn, but all sorts of other cultural figures appear, including Barthes, Rilke, Baudelaire, Hemingway, Derrida, Dickens, and numerous others . . . Enlightening walks through cities, cultural history, and a writer's heart and soul.” ―Kirkus

"This is a book about wandering women, the author included, who build relationships with their cities by walking through them . . . Women can and do make feminist statements simply by strolling through their stomping grounds; Elkin creates an interesting and inarguable case for this. She, too, is a wanderer and provides compelling anecdotes about her own journeys, interspersed with those of literary heavy-hitters George Sand, Jean Rhys, Virginia Woolf, and others . . . This is ultimately a celebration of women. You'll want to take a stroll by the end.” ―Library Journal

“Wonderful . . . A joyful genealogy of the female urban walker . . . The book’s narrative meanders brilliantly and appropriately across several time periods at once . . . Elkin’s flneuse does not simply wander aimlessly, any more than Elkin does herself in this elegant book: she uses her reflection to question, challenge and create anew the life that she observes.” ―Lara Feigel, The Guardian

“Flneuse is not simply a reclaiming of space, but also of a suppressed intellectual and cultural history . . . Finding ways to reframe images of women walking and to reverse male gazes, Flneuse builds on recent work by . . . Rebecca Solnit and the artist Laura Oldfield Ford, among others, with striking intellectual vigour and clear, enrapturing prose.” ―Sandeep Parmar, Financial Times

“An intense meditation on what it means to be a woman and walk out in the world . . . [Flneuse] encourages its readers to lace up their shoes and go for a walk . . . Elkin lets the reader become a companion to many women who have thought seriously about the relationship between a woman and the path she chooses to tread.” ―Erica Wagner, New Statesman

“Engaging, inspiring and vigorous . . . Buy it, read it, talk about it. And carry it with you in your mind when you next go walking in the city.” ―Matthew Adams, The National

"Deliciously spiky and seditious, [Elkin] takes her readers on a rich, intelligent and lively meander through cultural history, biography, literary criticism, urban topography and memoir . . . I defy anyone to read this celebratory study and not feel inspired to take to the streets in one way or another." ―Lucy Scholes, The Observer (London)

Flaneuse: a wonderful memoir, history, and celebration of city walking
By Merrily Baird
What a delight it is, with Lauren Elkin's "Flaneuse," to have a book that examines from the woman's viewpoint the art of "flanerie," a French noun that refers to wandering the streets of a big city without a specific destination in mind. Although the practice of "flanerie" by individuals known as "flaneurs" dates back at least to the 19th century in France, it is most commonly associated with an aimless, male-oriented lifestyle that flourished above all in Paris of the 1950s, a lifestyle usually involving multiple stops for liquid refreshment and days spent with few ends other than savoring the various moods of neighborhoods. That such an apparently aimless lifestyle had a certain cachet was due in good part to its linkage to prominent figures such as Guy Debord (a leftist philosopher and author) and to theories such as "psychogeographie" as promoted by Debord and other intellectuals. Elkin's puts the art of "flanerie" into historical perspective, relates it to cities other than just Paris and London, and, most important, celebrates its relevance to women. In searching for history's pioneering "flaneuses," she has identified George Sand and Virginia Woolf, among others, and, by recounting her own experiences in New York, Tokyo, and Venice, she brings the art of "flanerie' up to date and pens a charming memoir.

Readers intrigued by the tradition of "flanerie" may enjoy several books that provide enriching background. Luc Sante's "The Other Paris" has several pages of excellent material on Debord and the theory of "psychogeographie," while Merlin Coverley digs deeper in his academically-oriented "Psychogeography." Meanwhile, a sense of the 1950s cafe society of Paris is beautifully provided by Patrick Modiano's "In the Cafe of Lost Youth," which has been translated from the Nobel Prize winner's "Dans le cafe de la jeunesse perdue." The book opens with an epigraph from Guy Debord, leaving no doubt about the lifestyle to be described thereafter.

An inspiring, joyous read that is both memoir and historical analysis
By Judah M
I really loved this book! It is equal parts personal memoir and historical analysis. That might sound like an odd combination, but Elkin really merges her stories and observations in beautifully with the history of the city she is in. We get introduced to George Sand's Paris in the time of great change and revolt, we read about Virginia Woolf's beloved neighborhood and writing circle in London, as well as several other writers, artists and cinematographer's experiences in Venice, Tokyo, New York and the aforementioned cities. It is an inspiring, joyous read that I couldn't wait to pick up every day.

By Tracy Dillon
I was hoping for more of a travel essay about walking and discovering areas in Paris and other cities, but it's more of a history book. Not the light read I thought it would be.

The Editor in Chief of The Economist illuminates what global issues mattered in the last century--and how the ways in which we deal with them will shape our lives in the next

The attacks on September 11th, 2001, shook the rich West out of its complacency; suddenly, peace looked to be in peril. Even before that time prosperity was endangered, as campaigns mounted against the purported evils of capitalist globalization, such as inequality, pollution, and financial instability, and as America's high-tech stockmarket boom turned to bust. Yet, in the decade following the end of the Cold War, prospects had looked so rosy, with peace prevailing among the world's great powers, with billions of people joining the world market economy, and with great waves of technological change driving economies forwards.

What to make of such confusion and disappointment? What will the 21st century be like now? Bill Emmott, editor of the world's leading current affairs weekly, The Economist, argues that the best way to think about the future is to look back at the past, at the forces that have shaped our world and at what they tell us about the things that really matter in determining whether we are at peace or at war, in a state of liberty or repression, in a period of prosperity or of depression. From the twentieth century we can learn that two questions matter above all others: Will America continue to lead the world and to protect its peace? And will we continue to accept capitalism, with all its strengths and weaknesses, or will it be challenged once again? Bill Emmott's 20:21 Vision provides the answers that matter for all our lives in the twenty-first century.

From Publishers Weekly
Emmott, who predicted in 1989 that Japan's economic ascent would falter (in The Sun Also Sets), now applies his powers of conjecture again to project how broad historical forces will shape the 21st century, based on an analysis of the 20th. Editor in chief of the Economist, Emmott is a believer in the relative benevolence of American dominance and the relative rewards of unleashed capitalism. The two most important dynamics of the 20th century, he says, were the "United States taking over from Britain" as the protector of global order and capitalism's struggle against its authoritarian antagonists. Emmott believes the most crucial questions for the 21st century are whether America "will continue to keep the peace" and whether "capitalism will survive." Assessing the potential threats to American supremacy-China, Japan, the European Union, terrorism and the precariousness of America's commitment to internationalism-Emmott is cautiously optimistic about America's capacity to continue its leadership role. He is sometimes uncritical in prescribing freer markets as a panacea, but his endorsement of capitalism is carefully qualified. He identifies four flaws threatening its survival: Capitalism is "Unpopular," "Unstable," "Unequal" and "Unclean," in the words of his chapter headings. Despite limited government interventions to correct these dysfunctions, Emmott is hopeful that capitalism can expand its domain in the coming century. It is a wide-ranging and speculative project, and Emmott occasionally floats off into a breezy punditry. But mostly, his arguments are well grounded and his vision of the future is insightful.

From Library Journal
As the Economist's editor in chief contemplates the shift from the prosperous Nineties to today's more sober clime, he asks whether capitalism and America itself will retain their power.

From Booklist
As the abatement of the cold war released international politics and economics to flow in new directions, Emmott observed affairs from one of the most influential posts in journalism: the editorship of the Economist. His book will draw keen attention because of his prognostications about the world's next decades, especially considering trends of the 1990s indicative of danger and instability, including currency collapses, global warming, Islamic terrorism, and Chinese-American friction. Although he cautions readers to remain calm, Emmott elucidates myriad ways the international environment could dramatically deteriorate. However, he also posits that ameliorating trends will be ascendant, provided that America retains global hegemony and capitalism "retains the current, unusual allegiance it commands around the world." Emmott's sly injection of the word unusual underpins his survey of capitalism's twentieth-century history, in which it was accepted (except where abolished) for its bounty but resented for its inherent accentuation of inequality. A sensible, comprehensible package of prophecies. Gilbert Taylor

Past lessons applied to the future.
By Dex Randall Howard
(Note to Amazon: Over a month ago, I wrote the following review. Now and then, would access the title to see if the review had been posted. It had not. Last night, 10 January, I accessed Amazon's page with all my reviews and discovered the review was posted on that page. I returned to the book's page, but my review was not there. So, the review is posted on the page with all my reviews, but not on the review page for the book. Oddly, at least four people have read the view, how did they read it?)
The review title above was stolen from the book's subtitle. Mr. Emmontt's aim is not to predict the future, but to discover in last century's history those forces driving history.
To that end, the first part of the book devotes a chapter each to the histories of the United States, Europe & Russia, China and Japan. It ends with a chapter on world conflict and terror. The second part's chapters look at capitalism from the perspectives of booms & busts, social perceptions, domestic inequality, international inequality and the environment. There is both an introductory and concluding chapter.
Since a few commented on the author's analysis of China, I'll provide what I read him to say:
1.China is not like Imperial Germany, but perhaps more like Imperial Japan in the early decade of the 20th century.
2. Using traditional economic indicators, China is not yet the economic giant some envision. A few examples:
(a) China's share of world merchandise exports is around that of the Netherlands.
(b) China's GDP/person is around that of Sri Lanka.
(c) If purchasing power parity is used, then China's GDP is bigger than Japan's, but behind Thailand's and only 1/4 Korea's.
(d) Direct foregin investment into Japan is around 1/3 of Sweden's and 1/2 of the United Kingdom.
Several of these measures exclude Hong Kong. Some would object, but Hong Kong's numbers can be easily added and should the result significantly change China's position, what would that suggest about China's economic system relative to Hong Kong's?
The above numbers are on pp. 69-71
That said, the author begins by saying, ~ " ...With a population of 1.3 billion, it's natural rank ought again to be as the world's largest economy ... achieved with quite moderate levels of growth, if substained a few decades ... overtaking America as the world's largest economy sometime in the second or third decade of this century ... yet what would be geniunely disturbing would be if China failed to achieve its natural position as the world's largest economy ... for this would almost certainly mean that there had been some sort of economic breakdown, which would probably mean there had been a political breakdown..."
Much of the chapter examines how China's polity and economy interacted in the 20th century since similar pressures will continue into the 21st century.
It's a fine book. Concise and entertaining.

The prognosis of a paranoid optimist
By N. Tsafos
Visions of the future tend to be apocalyptic, whether it be grand geopolitical adjustments, the fear that growth will devastate the environment, or that the Malthusian trap will finally enclose humankind. In fact these types of prophesies make for good reading but, usually, silly predictions. To those who expect to read about the "fall of great powers," "coming anarchies," "clash of civilizations," or "end of histories," (to name a few futuristic bestsellers), Bill Emmott's book will appear rather dull and unimaginative. But it may well turn out to be more accurate than most other looks into the crystal ball.
Broadly speaking, forecasts suffer from two drawbacks: either they focus too much on detail and miss important underlying trends, or they try to conceive of a grand vision and lose touch with reality in the process. Bill Emmott, editor of The Economist since 1993, has tried to overcome these two problems by synthesizing his journalistic attention to detail with his historical instincts that add perspective to his argument. The product is a carefully balanced vision of where the world is headed.
Mr. Emmott believes that two big questions will define the fate of this century: will American hegemony continue and will capitalism survive? For both, he is optimistic. America's main elements of power, he argues, are unaltered-its tolerance of capitalism, its meritocracy and its focus on education. At the same time, potential rivals, for different reasons, are unlikely to take over any time soon. Terrorism, while important, is also unlikely to play a world-altering role in the coming years.
What about capitalism? After the end of the cold war, capitalism's intellectual and political allegiance has grown stronger. This trend is likely to continue, provided that capitalism deals with its biggest challenges-its unpopularity, uncleanness, inequality, and instability. Mr. Emmott goes at great length to show that the capitalist future is not certain-but he also shows with great conviction that most objections to capitalism are unfounded.
Mr. Emmott writes that he looks into the future with the outlook of a paranoid optimist: progress will continue, albeit with setbacks here and there. All too often, books on the future take on a big claim and foresee some radical new world order. A book predicting that the status quo will continue well into this century seems out of place with the futuristic literature. That may disappoint many readers. But that does not mean that Mr. Emmott is not right.

Excellent resource for navigating a new search environment
By Neil Klingshirn
I used to think I knew it all when it came to law firm SEO, and for years we enjoyed top employment law keyword positions in Google. That changed about 18 months ago, when Google made major changes to its search algorithms to place the emphasis on local search. This book explains those changes and provides an understandable, step by step process for doing well in local searches. Spoiler alert: Content is still King. Where and how you use it, though, has changed. The book also provides solid suggestions for website design (keep it simple; make emails and calls easy, and include and use a blog) and social media marketing.

Kudos also to author Jabez LeBret, who took my call and spent a good hour answering questions that I had specific to our practice and websites. Finally, I bought Kindle copies for our SEO expert and web developer, to get us all on the same page.

Fantastic, up to date resource
By Trey Barrow
This book is exactly what every lawyer needs to succeed on the internet. Actually, although this was written primarily for attorneys, the information in this book would benefit any business seeking to increase their presence on the internet. This is a short read that is full of very detailed information. The specific instructions, including the timing of each step will help the novice and experience SEO avoid common, costly mistakes. I was expecting a decent overview, but was blown away by the current, detailed content in this little treasure.

I have a lot of experience in SEO and still learned a great deal reading this book. HIGHLY Recommended.

Feeling hopeless or frustrated in relationships?
By Ish Kabibble
If you are in any kind of recovery process or in a relationship of any kind, troubled or not; this book may provide insights you never thought of. Alcoholism, substance and process addictions, are a leading health issue for most of the world. This book pulls back the covers on these topics to reveal an unconscious driving force fueling these pernicious maladies. It reveals mental and emotional patterns, processes, and characteristics programed in early childhood and young adulthood, long before any symptoms of substance abuse arise. Making known these patterns through self-awareness and identification and some personal family history detective work can enable me to take proactive steps in here and now relationship communications and crises. This book is about identifying both controlling patterns and dependent tendencies at unhealthy levels and taking the necessary actions through support and connection with one's innermost strengths. It is not about a quick fix to these problems but a plan of action that through group and personal effort one can attain and maintain a life of relationships in health, love, and honesty. This book is about self-care at the deepest level; as Rene puts it, "my core integrity and root honesty". You'll never look at codependency, addiction, or relationships the same again.

An Eye Opener
By Lill
The Addict's Loop showed me a clarity that I've never experienced before. How to rise above the muddled feelings and see it clearly. Showed me what to look for, what to stay away from and how to rise above it. Instead of getting sucked into these crazy scenarios, I have more understanding of what is really going on. I am already feeling better about my future with this book guiding my way. I've been on this loop for way too long.
My favorite part is that the addict rotates. What a revelation! Geez-I've SEEN myself do it. Couldn't stop it. So I just got out of the relationship thing...just gave up. I'm so excited to try a new relationship and apply these principles! There's hope! Maybe I CAN have a love life without all the drama!
