Comprehensive
By N. Cal shopper
As a graduating genetic counseling student, I have found this book to be highly valuable. It covers much of the practical information needed for genetic counseling, from how to run a session to psychosocial issues. It does not cover genetics, and is not meant to be that kind of text. This book is meant to be used in conjunction with genetic counseling classes and clinical training experience.

Ancient Scandinavia: An Archaeological History from the First Humans to the Vikings, by T. Douglas Price

Scandinavia, a land mass comprising the modern countries of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, was the last part of Europe to be inhabited by humans. Not until the end of the last Ice Age when the melting of huge ice sheets left behind a fresh, barren land surface, about 13,000 BC, did the first humans arrive and settle in the region. The archaeological record of these prehistoric cultures, much of it remarkably preserved in Scandinavia's bogs, lakes, and fjords, has given us a detailed portrait of the evolution of human society at the edge of the inhabitable world.

In this book, distinguished archaeologist T. Douglas Price provides a history of Scandinavia from the arrival of the first humans to the end of the Viking period, ca. AD 1050. The first book of its kind in English in many years, Ancient Scandinavia features overviews of each prehistoric epoch followed by illustrative examples from the region's rich archaeology. An engrossing and comprehensive picture of change across the millennia emerges, showing how human society evolved from small bands of hunter-gatherers to large farming communities to the complex warrior cultures of the Bronze and Iron Ages, cultures which culminated in the spectacular rise of the Vikings at the end of the prehistoric period. The material evidence of these past societies--arrowheads from reindeer hunts, megalithic tombs, rock art, beautifully wrought weaponry, Viking warships--give vivid testimony to the ancient peoples of Scandinavia and to their extensive contacts with the remote cultures of the Arctic Circle, Western Europe, and the Mediterranean

Review

"Although Scandinavia is relatively young in terms of human occupation compared to its European neighbors, this books shows that it is a rich area for studying important archaeological questions.... This book fills a gap in the market-- being one of the few overviews of Scandinavian prehistory written in English. ... Price's fascination with Scandinavia and extensive experience excavating in Denmark shines through on every page." --World Archaeology

"Anyone interested in Scandinavian prehistory, student and researcher alike, will be superbly served by this book, which elegantly blends synthesis with in-depth case studies. Highly recommended." --Kristian Kristiansen, University of Gothenburg

"Price has written the most accessible overview of Scandinavian prehistory in decades, taking the reader on a well-illustrated journey of some 14,000 years from the first settlement to the time of the Vikings. With remarkable fluency, a clear line of narrative chronology links major discoveries, debates and key sites, and the result is superb. For a one-stop guide to the archaeology of the Scandinavian countries, this is the book." --Neil Price, University of Uppsala

"This book provides a comprehensive overview of the archaeology of Scandinavia, from the first inhabitants 15,000 years ago to the time of the Vikings. The author's focus on specific sites of settlements, burials, and treasure deposits shows the reader clearly how archaeologists reconstruct ancient societies from the material evidence." --Peter S. Wells, University of Minnesota

Yoga Mala: The Original Teachings of Ashtanga Yoga Master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois

The seminal treatise and guide to Ashtanga yoga by the master of this increasingly popular discipline

One of the great yoga figures of our time, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois brought Ashtanga yoga to the West more than thirty years ago. Based on flowing, energetic movement coordinated with the breath, Ashtanga and the many forms of vinyasa yoga that grow directly out of it have become the most widespread and influential styles practiced today.

Yoga Mala―a "garland of yoga"―is Jois's authoritative guide to Ashtanga. In it, he outlines the ethical principles and philosophy underlying the discipline, explains important terms and concepts, and guides the reader through Ashtanga's Sun Salutations and the subsequent primary sequence of forty-two asanas, or poses, precisely describing how to execute each position and what benefits each provides. It is a foundational work on yoga by a true master.

To coincide with publication of Guruji: A Portrait of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Through the Eyes of His Students by Guy Donahaye and Eddie Stern, this new edition of Yoga Mala includes a foreword by Jois's grandson Sharath Rangaswamy, currently co-director of the famous school Jois founded in Mysore, the Ashtanga Yoga Institute.

YOGA MALA
YOGA ASANASThe asanas that follow the Surya Namaskara should be practiced in the manner described below.1. PADANGUSHTASANAPadangushtasana has three vinyasas, of which the 2nd is the state of the asana (see figure).1

METHODFirst, stand up straight, inhaling through the nostrils deeply, jump the legs apart as much as half a foot, slowly let the breath out, reach down and take hold of the big toes, lift the head and chest up completely without bending the knees, and stay in position while inhaling; this is the 1st vinyasa. Then, letting the breath out, take in the lower abdomen, place the head in the region between the two knees, straighten the knees, and stay in position, doing puraka and rechaka as much as possible; this is the 2nd vinyasa (see figure).2 Next, inhaling, slowly lift the head, remaining in position with the fingers holding the big toes; this is the 3rd vinyasa. Then exhale and return to Samasthiti. While in the state of this asana, the lower abdomen should be drawn in and held tightly, and rechaka and puraka should be done slowly and as much as possible. This is the way to do Padangushtasana.

BENEFITSPadangushtasana dissolves the fat of the lower abdomen, and purifies both the kanda, or egg-shaped nerve plexus in the anal region, and the rectum.COPYRIGHT 1999, 2002 BY SRI K. PATTABHI JOIS

Lays the ground work for a strong Ashtanga practice
By Amazon Customer
I found this book to be an excellent source on both the philosophy of Ashtanga yoga as well as a great how to of moving from one asana to the next in the Primary Series. Do not buy this book if you are trying to learn the Primary Series from a book. Although the level of detail in this book is great, Ashtanga is better learn watching/learning from a live person, or if you are really pressed for money and/or do not have an Ashtanga teacher near you get a good video (David Swenson, Richard Freeman, John Scott, and others have excellent tapes out). With that said, this book is a wonderful reference tool and offers exact breath counts. In Ashtanga, every movement is associated with a breath, this book provides information on how to get in and out of every posture in the primary series following the breath (i.e. how many inhalations and exhalations should be accomplished moving between postures). This book also offers great detail as it relates to living the yoga you practice. While I may not agree with Jois' entire philosophy, it is a great deal of knowledge to be gained from this book. This book is a must read if you are an Ashtanga practioner or teacher. This book will help you deepen your practice both physically and spiritually. I would also suggest this book for anyone curious about the philosophy of Ashtanga yoga.

Essential reading
By Daniel McGuire
This is one of the essential yoga texts. No serious yoga student can be without it. It was originally published privately in a short run a few years back and sold thousands of copies with no advertising. The new edition has a helpful new forward by the translator that gives more in-depth info on how Jois came to study yoga inthe 1920's. Beautifully designed, flawlessly translated, and amazing historical photographs. With all the silly yoga books out there, we should be grateful that Jois and some others still maintain high standards.

Very interesting information
By Dancing Shakti
What I liked the most of the book is that the benefits of each pose are explained. For example: it says of Utthita Hasta Padangushtasana "it loosens the hip joints, destroys defects of the testicles and male organs of generation, and purifies and strengthens the vertebral column, waist, hips and lower abdomen. It also eliminates constipation." Further along it says "Matsyasana and Uttana Padasana counterpose the five asanas that precede them and remove the shoulder and waist pain that result from their practice. They also purify the esophagus and anus, as well as the liver and the spleen, and furnish the waist and neck with increasing strength."
This is a small book but with lots of useful information on the primary series. It explains how to practice, what to eat, how to behave (the eight limbs)...
Each pose of the series is described, there aren't extraordinary tips or insights on how to go deeper into the pose or with great alignment (if you are looking for that you may want to check the books by Gregor Maehle Ashtanga Yoga: Practice and Philosophy), but there is a succint entry -with a picture of the asana- where the breath count is explained, as well as the number of vinyasas of each asana ("Doing puraka, stand, as in Prasarita Padottanasana, stretch arms out to the sides at chest level and straighten them, as in Trikonasana, and hold position; this is the first vinyasa. Then, doing rechaka, place the hands on the waist; this is the second vinyasa..."). And each entry ends with a paragraph of the benefits of each pose, what maladies they alleviate and what part of the body they act upon. There are poses for the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, pancreas, legs... you name it!
At the beginning of the book P. Jois explains that the poses are to be held for five breaths, but if someone is in healing mode, "the aspirant may remain in the curative postures specific to a complaint for 50 to 80 breaths".
Jois explains that the primary series is called 'yoga chikitsa' which means 'yoga therapy' and it's purpose is to cleanse the body, cure any disease and realign it with health. He says that to 'graduate' him his teacher gave him a test, he presented him with a man that was ill and told Jois: 'cure him'. I found that interesting... that the primary series is pretty much devised as medicine! and it also gets the body supple and ready for the second series that focus on the cleansing of the nervous system.

Review
Review from previous edition Steve Peers's book on ' Third Pillar ' matters is a remarkable volume, at both what one might call the ' macro- ' and ' micro- ' levels. At the higher level, it gives some sense of quite how much action has been taken in the sensitive fields of criminal law and immigration under the EU umbrella. At the level of detail, Peers shows just how complex the programmes are. ...It is a tribute to the massive endeavour of Professor Peers, as well as to the broad scope of his knowledge, that this book carries off with enormous authority both the macro- and micro- tasks. Colin Warbrick, International Journal of Refugee Law, Vol 20, No.1, March 2008 EU Justice and Home Affairs Law offers a thorough and accessible account of this important and developing area of law...This book will be of real value to those working in criminal law, legislation, policy development and considering as it does visa, border control and the free movement of people, those within immigration and asylum and related areas David Dickson, Extradition Team Leader, International Co-operation Unit Crown Office Edinburgh

Early Aegean Warrior 5000-1450 BC, by Raffaele D'Amato, Andrea Salimbeti

The civilisations of the Greece in the Ancient World have inspired and fascinated throughout European history. The stories of Homer, later reinforced by the pioneering archaeological work carried out by men such as Heinrich Schliemann at Mycenae and Sir Arthur Evans at Knossos, have enabled modern researchers and historians to piece together a rich material culture and reconstruct the mysteries of the Ancient World.
The mainland and islands of Greece were extensively settled by peoples moving from Asia Minor in c.5000 BC, while a further wave in c.5000 BC introduced bronze-working to the region. It is form this point on that it is possible to discern a distinct Cycladic or Aegean civilisation, developing at roughly the same time as the Egyptian and Persian civilisations. Further to the south, the Minoan civilisation based on Crete held sway, and this power - along with the Helladic Achaeans to the north gradually swamped the Cycladic civilisation in between.
In common with most Bronze Age societies, the culture of the Aegean world was dominated by warfare, with the inhabitants living in organized settlements and small citadels with fortification walls and bulwarks, towers and gates to provide protection against invaders from the sea or internecine conflicts. Using the latest archaeological evidence, this title recreates the world of these peoples through a detailed examination of their material culture.

An excellent succinct overview of the subject making use of the latest archaeological evidence
By Yoda
First and foremost, any review of this book would have to begin with a quick discussion of the Osprey "Warrior" series format, of which it is part of. These books are relatively short, being only 48 pages in length (about a third of which consists of illustration). Hence if one is looking for an in-depth tome on the subject this is not the book to pick up. It can only serve, due to the limits of the format, as a succinct overview. A second point that needs to be made is that the author, Dr. Raffaele D'Amato, is extremely knowledgeable regarding the subject. He received his PhD in Roman-Byzantine studies, is the curator of the World Museum of Man and has written extensively on related topics (i.e., Osprey's "Bronze Age Greek Warriors 1600-11 BC"). This knowledge permeates the entire book.

Considering the limits of the format, the question that needs to be asked is how well does the book cover the subject? The answer is surprisingly well. This is so for a number of reasons. The most important, by far, is that includes the most up-to-date research on the subject. This research is nearly all in the form of archaeological evidence. The book is also richly illustrated and the reader obtains a very good idea of how, based on the archaeological evidence, these warriors dressed and what type of weapons they used during this period (and how the weapons and dress developed over the period). This is the book's strength. The book also does a very good job at examining the ethnological movements of peoples throughout this region during the period albeit it does lack maps that would have been a great benefit in this respect.

Where the book is weak, however, is its coverage of the military organizational structures of these societies, tactics and strategies? However, as even the author points out, these are not known and the current academic material covering them is more hypothesis and speculation than anything based on hard evidence, whether it is hard archaeological evidence or the mythology or literature of the time.

All and all a very good succinct very up-to-date overview of the subject.

Archaeology, reconstructions and descriptions
By JPS
This Osprey publication may seem a bit unusual, because it largely lacks the historical context that can be found in most other volumes of the series. A fairer assessment would be to recognize the choice that the authors have deliberately made to concentrate on archaeological findings, to describe these and to use them as the basis for their reconstructions. To a large extent, their alternatives were limited simply because there were no primary written sources that they could make use of.

This is not to say that there is no discussion of the origins of the various waves of "Indo-Europeans", or the Cretans, for instance. Only that it is kept to a minimum with the authors, for instance, also clearly making the point that the existence of the "Minoan sea power" is nothing more than a theory dating back to Evans, even if it is a plausible and logical one, as they also show. Also interesting is the explanation given for the collapse of Minoan power. Again, this is a theory, to the extent that we do not know "know" for sure in the absence of written sources, but it is a rather plausible one. One last important point is that by the time of the "Trojan War" (assuming, again, that it really took place as indicated by Homer), Crete was divided into Achaean principalities with the Achaeans having conquered the island and ruling it for a couple of centuries

The main (and high!) value of this book lies in its descriptions centred on the various findings of pieces of arms and armour, on one hand, and the rather gorgeous reconstructions through the plates. At times, the descriptions of assorted arms and armour may read as some museum catalogue but with the added advantage that they are a selection from findings all over Greece and the Aegean. They are also superbly illustrated by sets of pictures and drawings.

Then there are the colour plates themselves which, when superb as they are here, are one of the main attractions of every Osprey volume. I was particularly impressed by the one of page 57 titled "the Achaean conquest of Knossos, 1430 BC" with the characters "feeling" so real that I had the impression that they were about to leap of the page! More generally, there is a rather good interaction between the plates, the pictures and drawings and the main text.

I also had two relatively minor points to raise - I cannot call them "issues". One was about the bibliography, where the authors referenced multiple and rather specialized titles but did not seem to recommend any book that could provide more context about the period. For instance, I was surprised not to find a reference to Oliver Dickinson's "The Aegean Bronze Age", although another of his works is cited. Maybe space constraints obliged the authors to make some hard choices and leave that one (and a few others perhaps) out. Another little quibble is a tendency to write about the various periods and using the rather specialised and hermetic acronyms (such as LH, LM etc...) without always providing the corresponding dates. The non-specialist reader is then obliged to "jump back and forth" at times to see what period is being covered exactly.

Anyway, these were quibbles more than anything else and the title was worth a solid four stars for me.

Pelasgians and Minoans
By McGuinnThompsonKaukonenVerlaineCarthyBassanaStephensSteveJonesBobbyBeausoleil
Finally someone has tackled the dodgy question of weapons, armor, ships and tactics in the pre-Hellenic Aegean. The mainland, Crete and the Cyclades are all covered in this wonderful book. While some of the inferences were come to inductively, I feel no doubt that they are on the mark.

Fun, romantic, at times shocking and full of crazy Keatyn stunts
By RomanceRWblog
Every single time I read one of Jillian's books I'm simply blown away by her ability to suck me in with her storytelling. So much so that when I'm knee deep in one of her stories I honestly have no idea what's going on around me or how long I've even been reading! I stumbled across the first book of the Keatyn Chronicle's, Stalk Me, simply because it was a FREE download. But without even realizing what was happening, I found myself addicted to her completely outrageous, fun, exciting, dangerous, full of hot guys life, and I have no problem admitting that I love every single minute I get to spend reading about that crazy insane life.

I love Keatyn and I am so proud of how much she has grown since Stalk Me. Her growth as a character has never been more evident than in Hate Me. She is tired of hiding, frustrated Vincent hasn't backed down but instead continues to threaten the ones she loves most and she's fed up. Keatyn wants control of her life and she will stop at nothing to get exactly what she wants, so is no longer taking orders but giving them and I LOVE her strength and fierceness. In the past books, she's struggled with trying to figure out who she really is, what she really wants out of life and even what love really feels like. Now she is embracing life, making the most of the time she has with Aiden and all her other friends at Eastbrooke, yet she stays honest with herself and never forgets it's entirely possible the cost of getting her life back may in fact be her life. She is also beginning to realize there are different types of love and slowly figuring out what type of love it is she has for the 2 boys in her life, Brooklyn and Aiden. Keatyn Douglas and Keatyn Monroe are starting to become one person and I'm so excited to get to the conclusion in Get Me and find out if she succeeds in taking down Vincent and who Moon Boy ends up being that I have no idea how I'm going to make it until August!

Ultimately I am team Keatyn, but if I had to choose between Brooklyn and Aiden then it's always going to be Aiden. These two haven't had an easy start, there have been misunderstandings, frustrations and overwhelming amounts of chemistry from day one. But the one constant in my mind seems to be they both want each other and they each feel things for one another they've never felt in past relationships. In Hate Me, Aiden fans finally get the chance to see how these two work as a couple, and for me it was complete perfection. Every moment and interaction between the two makes it seem as though they truly are the perfect match, of course Aiden still doesn't know Keatyn's big secret and we have no idea of his reaction when a version of the truth is revealed. But, Keatyn finally accepts she has no control over Aiden's reaction and she accepts if he really is her Moon Boy then he will eventually understand her motives for lying.

As usual when it comes to all things regarding Brooklyn I found myself frustrated. Frustrated with him for being so wishy washy, frustrated with Keatyn for always forgiving him so easily and frustrated she still holds on to the promise of giving herself one more chance of happiness with him. I don't always believes he comes across as worthy of a second chance, his actions and reactions always come across to me as self-centered. I haven't really seen him put Keatyn first. Yes, he does have good ideas, and yes he does push Keatyn to get her life back and even offers help, but when it comes down to it, I have never seen him follow through with actions. Yet, Aiden is willing to give up his entire life just to be with Keatyn because she makes him happy, because he believes what he feels for Keatyn will last forever, he wants forever with her. I haven't seen Brooklyn make this kind of grand gesture and I think if he does I'm going to worry and wonder if he will actually follow through. Of course I know first loves are a hard thing to get over, and I know Keatyn holds tights to her memories of life before Vincent and Eastbrooke, and I understand why she feels like she owes it to Brooklyn to hold onto the promise of one more chance at perfection, but that doesn't mean I want those things for her or that I think Brooklyn is her Moon Boy. Of course Jillian leaves us with an ending where we wonder what will happen if Keatyn succeeds, if Aiden forgives her lies, if Brooklyn wants to actually give the relationship another chance? What will Keatyn want once Vincent is out of the picture, when she can choose who she wants in her life without the stress of lies and the unknown.

Hate Me in my opinion is the best book of the series thus far! It's fun, romantic, at times shocking and full of crazy Keatyn stunts. You will love every minute of this book. Jillian Dodd is a mastermind and even though through hints she has told us where and when Eastbrooke will find out her true identity I was still completely surprised how things went down! Thank you Jillian Dodd for another fantastic escape into the life of one of my favorite characters.

I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Christmas comes in April!!
By BookFan
Christmas really does come in April!!

I was lucky enough to read this book early. When I saw it on my kindle, I can not tell you how happy and nervous I was at the same time. This is one of my very favorite series and with the release of each book, I am a huge frazzled bundle of nerves. I have been living in an Adore Me bubble, and honestly, I did not want to come out of it and have all my hopes and dreams burst. I was highly apprehensive about this book and where the story would go.

It is very hard to write a review without spoilers but all I can say is READ THIS BOOK AND SERIES!! I should not have worried and just trusted Jillian to continue with Keatyn's story. It is HER story and how she will finally get her life back. I think it will go one way, but then there are always twists and turns that Jillian gives us that makes me say....never saw that coming! The reason why I love this series so much is because Jillian has the ability to give me what I didn't know I even wanted. She gives me so much more!!

This story picks up right after Adore Me. Keatyn wants to protect her family, friends, and loved ones while dealing with Vincent. For me, this book has a more serious undertone to it. You really can see what Keatyn is struggling with while trying to get her life back. These are things that no seventeen year old should worry about or give up to just survive. My heart broke for her and the choices she had to make.

But don't get me wrong, this story has a lot of funny and sexy in it too!! The whole gang is back in Eastbrooke and I just loved being around them again. There are no words for Dallas and the things he says and does!! We get naughty santa, furry rugs, and tons of swoon worthy moments for all the couples. And a certain scene involving a pool table..... have mercy!!

And as for Keatyn's loves..... she is torn between her old life and what she knew with Brooklyn and her new life with Aiden. How will it end when the truth finally comes out? Will they hate her or come and get her in the end?? That is the question that I can't wait to find out when Get Me is released in August!!!

I don't like to say anything about a book in the review because I believe everyone should be able to enjoy it without spoilers. So with saying that all I will say is that NO ONE will be disappointed in this book. As usual Mrs. Dodd has outdone herself, AGAIN.

William Merritt Chase: A Modern Master, by Elsa Smithgall, Erica Hirshler, Katherine M. Bourguignon, Giovanna Ginex, John Davis

A landmark retrospective that examines William Merritt Chase and his lasting contribution to the history of modern art

The history of modern art owes a great debt to William Merritt Chase (1849–1916), one of America’s influential artists and educators. Chase was a leading member of the international artistic avant-garde and was best known for his mastery of a wide range of subjects in oil and pastel, including figures, landscapes, urban park scenes, interiors, and portraits. As a teacher and founder of the Shinnecock Summer School of Art and the New York School of Art, Chase mentored a new generation of modernists, including Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Joseph Stella.

A century after his death, the breadth and richness of Chase’s career are celebrated in this beautifully illustrated publication. Five essays by prominent scholars of American art offer new insights into Chase’s multi-faceted artistic practice and his position in the international cultural climate at the turn of the 20th century.

Review
“Undoubtedly, Damrosch's latest book is a useful tool for prospective readers (especially English-speaking ones) of world literature. It introduces them to major works of world literature and shows them how to read these works, both in their original form and in translation. The author succeeds in his endeavor to launch his readers to ‘read, and read, and read still more.’” (Bryn Mawr Classical Review, April 2009)

Mediocre
By An Amazonian
Domrosch surveys the territory, but he doesn't really have an idea uniting his book. I wasn't impressed. Yes, big schemes are reductive and always end up getting torn down, but this book is too close to an unstructured stream of details.
